The State Highway Administration's (SHA) District 4, Maintenance Division is currently recruiting for a Transportation Engineering Technician V in Baltimore and Harford counties. This position is open to SHA employees only who meet the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.
Nature of Work: As a Transportation Engineer Technician V, this individual performs duties in maintenance work areas including but not limited to repairs to roadways, buildings, parking areas, bridges, traffic barrier, lighting, drainage (pipes, inlets, manholes, etc.), shoulders, crack sealing, salt structures, and pavement markings (striping, heat applied lines and symbols, rpms). The inspector will work for the District Maintenance Operations Engineer (DOE) in the repair areas noted above with a concentration on traffic barrier repairs. The employee is expected to give guidance and assistance to less experienced employees.
The Transportation Engineer Technician V receives assignments from the DOEs daily. Inspection duties will include ensuring contractors comply with all current SHA standards and specifications of construction and materials; record documentation, both written and electronic, of materials, equipment and manpower for various work activities; and tracking and reporting task progress to ensure projects are completed in a safe and timely manner.
This position will provide an advanced level of technical and professional experience to ensure that the daily maintenance operations in the district 4 maintenance office are carried out correctly, safely, and in compliance with administration requirements.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Eight (8) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.
Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years.
2. Applicants who possess an associate's degree in either engineering, construction management or surveying or surveying technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the eight-year experience requirement.

Licenses & Certifications

Candidate must possess a CDL B license valid in the State of Maryland.
Candidate must possess a valid Maryland Transportation Builders & Materials Association (MTBMA) Inspector-Traffic Barrier Certification.
The selected candidate will be required to obtain and retain the following certifications within six (6) - twelve (12) months of appointment:
- Work Zone Traffic Control Manager Certification

Special Requirements:
- Employees in this classification may be considered "Essential Employees" and may be required to sign and agree to all policies and procedures relating to "Essential Employee" status.
- This position will be on call 24/7 for highway emergencies and natural disasters and is considered essential personnel.
- This position may be required to work various shifts and on weekends depending on assignment.
