Process Engineer - Senior Level - Non-Ferrous Emphasis (Hybrid/Remote)

Summary:

The person in this position will lead and work on challenging mineral and chemical processing projects and provide leadership to experienced engineering professionals. The person selected for this position will help support multidisciplinary project teams involved with mineral processing, extractive metallurgy, and related engineering activities. Project assignments may include feasibility studies, process testing and piloting, process design, project implementation, and plant startup/commissioning.

The selected candidate will provide leadership and technical expertise in developing material and energy balance models, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, technical reports, equipment specifications, and capital and operating cost estimates.

Knowledge and experience with pumping systems, slurry hydraulics, thickeners, material conveying, and tailings management systems is also important. Candidates must have experience with plant sampling and proper protocols, along with the ability to interpret and understand design drawings to make recommendations.

The selected candidate will work on projects involving a variety of minerals, including nonferrous precious/base metals, industrial minerals, iron, coal, and oil sands. The person in this position will also have the opportunity to support business development activities. The work may at times require short-term, out-of-town work assignments.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, metallurgical engineering, or a related field with academic coursework directly related to the job responsibilities described above

  • Ten or more years of work experience in non-ferrous processing (precious metals, base metals, industrial minerals)

  • Experience working at mine or industrial sites as an operating engineer or consultant

  • Ability to apply structured decision-analysis and problem-solving skills for plant troubleshooting, performance optimization, and continuous improvement

  • Excellent analysis and observational skills, along with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve process issues

  • Experience with developing client relationships and project opportunities in mineral processing and supporting disciplines

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

  • Willingness to work in a project-team environment that encourages self-initiative

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multidisciplinary projects

  • Willingness and ability to mentor younger staff members

  • A flexible working style as required to meet deadlines and/or client needs

  • Willingness to travel for business development purposes

  • Familiarity with basic Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future

  • Possession of a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in chemical engineering, metallurgical engineering, or a related field

  • Experience with non-ferrous metallurgical and plant processes

  • Fifteen or more years of related experience

  • Strong relationships with clients and the ability to develop or foster ongoing relationships and maintain a high level of client service

  • Proven project management skills

  • Fluency in mineral processing simulation software such as METSIM

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification or ability to obtain PE within one year

  • Current NCEES record

  • SME Registered Member

A hybrid or remote work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office; a remote arrangement refers working primarily from a home office. This position is/can be based out of Barr's Salt Lake City office. Remote arrangements will be considered based on candidate qualifications, location requirements, and Barr's needs.

Compensation:

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $109,000-130,000 /year. This position is classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance.Barr has a "no retained earnings" model and distributes all its profit to our employees through our bonus plan and ESOP.
