This position requires an employee to work between 20-25 hours per week during the school semesters, and 40 hours per week during summer, not to exceed 1,500 hours in a calendar year. Each semester, undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and graduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.

INTERN GUIDELINES:
Students who have completed at least one year of college and are enrolled as a full-time student may apply. Must be enrolled full-time in a degree seeking program. A student's intern position will end within three months after graduation.

Pay Rate:

$21.00 - $24.00/hour

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am-4:00pm Job Description:

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under the direction of the Engineer IV - SpringNet or designee, performs engineering duties necessary for the completion of the department's goals. Duties will be dependent upon the individual job classification and departmental workload and may include any or all the duties described below.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Performs general engineering functions in the design and operation of SpringNet fiber optic system.

2. Reviews various SpringNet maps and map applications to identify fiber optic cable types, installation locations (underground or aerial), and perform cable traces to determine the approximate location for a specified length.

3. Reviews various construction plans within the City Plan Review process to identify potential conflicts between planned construction and existing SpringNet facilities. Collaborates with the supervisor to provide necessary plan review comments.

4. Reviews plans from other City Utilities departments to proactively identify potential conflicts between their planned construction and existing SpringNet facilities. Furnishes relevant maps of SpringNet infrastructure and coordinates closely to aid their accurate planning and prevent construction-related conflicts.

5. Designs fiber optic line extensions to provide communication services to new customers.

6. Surveys existing electric line poles, aerial cabling, and underground facilities. Measures various attachment heights for power and communications line attachments on existing power poles

7. Redesigns existing communication facilities for commercial and industrial customers due to system capacity, building additions, or other construction activities.

8. Performs engineering designs for preventative maintenance projects.

9. Performs engineering design and layout of fiber optic facility adjustments as required for highway improvement projects, sewer projects, and other municipal improvement projects.

10. Reviews, updates, and prepares fiber optic construction standards. Prepares job sketches, drawings, material lists, cost estimates, and construction labor estimates as required.
11. Performs fiber optic splicing designs. Maintains fiber optic splicing records. Creates and updates fiber optic system schematics.

12. Prepares contracts for bidding purposes as required to secure contractors to perform work on the fiber optic system such as line construction, maintenance, and emergency rebuilds.

13. Design work referenced above is subject to the approval of a Registered Professional Engineer to assure compliance with federal, state, or local requirements.

14. Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering from a college or university with a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). No previous engineering experience is required. Basic knowledge of AutoCAD preferred.

Licensing/Certification:

Must have a valid driver's license (minimum Class F).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Working knowledge of engineering functions and problem-solving techniques.
* Maintain adherence to all company policies.
* Ability to:
o Plan, organize, and coordinate technical work.
o Understand the problems and practices applicable to the functions of engineering.
o Complete assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
o Communicate thoughts and ideas verbally and in writing.
o Complete basic computer functions with a familiarity in Microsoft Word and Excel.
o Effectively handle numerous assignments simultaneously and accurately.
o Successfully navigate various electronic programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suites, other applicable information technology applications, and self-service platforms.

Physical Requirements:

Typically, sedentary work. An ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and receive detailed information through oral communication. Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and close visual acuity to operate a computer is required. Must be able to bend, stoop, and walk long distances over uneven terrain to survey electric line facilities.

Working Conditions:

Duties are primarily performed in an office environment with some outside fieldwork in all weather conditions.

Miscellaneous Requirements:

* New hires are informed of the requirements of the Internship Program upon hire, and incumbents must continue to meet the requirements each semester to continue employment. Interns who do not meet the requirements may be ineligible for the Internship Program and their employment may be terminated.
* Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.
* Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.
