Position Title: HSSQE Coordinator

Reports To: HSSQE Manager

Schedule: Monday through Friday business hours and additional as required

Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL

Position Supervised: None

Required Qualifications

Education: Maritime Academy graduate with a bachelor's degree in a marine field or acceptable technical and educational experience.

Experience: Formal education in marine safety / environmental protection and/or three years in the maritime industry, with practical experience in safety management activities

Languages: English

Traits: Ability to travel as necessary for projects, ability to work well with others, self-starter, proactive, flexible with work schedule, well organized. Possess or have the ability to obtain a Transportation Work Identification Card (TWIC); team-player, strong communication skills, self-motivator

Preferred Qualifications

Skills/Software: Exposure to incident reviews and accident investigations in accordance with Industry standards. Strong working knowledge of applicable Code of Federal Regulations, SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code, ISPS Code, MTSA, OPA '90, and other associated regulatory compliance requirements. Good documentation, writing, and verbal communication skills. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)

Education: Exposure to marine safety and environmental protections standards. Basic understanding of incident investigation and root cause analysis. Training in corrective actions.

Other: Ability to drive long distances (up to 5 hours) and/or travel by air to various domestic and foreign ports possibly requiring overnight stays.

Ability to board vessels in port (requires using a gangway with a grade of 30-60 degrees).

Ability to climb ladders and navigate over uneven surfaces during vessel visits.

Ability to board vessels at anchor (climb a Jacob's ladder from a water taxi).

Possess good sensory perception (sight, smell, hearing, touch).

Ability to safely enter and inspect confined spaces.

Willingness to remain accessible for communication and consultation on an around the clock basis and work unusual hours, including nights and weekends as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Support the HSSQE Manager in ensuring that the Company's "Safety Management System" is effectively implemented, understood, maintained, and continuously improved and remains in compliance with and certified by recognized authorities.
  • Supports the drive to Goal Zero as outlined in the Safety Management Systems Health, Safety, Security, Quality and Environmental Policies.
  • Assists with conducting internal audits both ashore and aboard vessels as needed.
  • When directed, assist with performing incident investigations and developing the subsequent root cause analysis with corrective and preventive actions as needed.
  • Provide and implement recommendations for the development of organizational programs and campaigns by ensuring the potential and actual occupational health and safety hazards, environmental impacts, and operational risks are considered.
  • Assists Superintendents to ensure CAR corrective and preventive actions are effective and completed within time requirements. Drafts the Corrective Action Plan (CAP) from non-conformities as appropriate for internal & external audits.
  • Assists in developing Quarterly and Annual Management Review content.
  • Drafts safety alerts, learning from incidents, and other newsletter content to shore-side and shipboard personnel.
  • Communicate and work with regulatory agencies, customers, vendors and industry groups with respect to HSSQE matters.
  • Participates in tabletop exercises and emergency drills (internal and external/third party) as required.
  • Assist in monitoring and evaluating the impact of new regulations and industry requirements, including developing or revising existing fleet guidance.
  • Performs other duties as specified by management.
