Posting Summary |
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Temporary Research Assistant position for the department of Neurology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Temporary Research Assistant will work in a laboratory dedicated to studying the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and Lewy Body Dementia. The primary duties of the Temporary Research Assistant will include with studies of genetically modified mice, including mouse husbandry and genotyping, tissue sectioning, staining, performing experiments, as well as maintaining laboratory equipment and stock solutions.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Maintains colonies of genetically modified mice, including mouse husbandry and genotyping.
- Conducts behavioral testing in mice.
- Assists in mouse surgeries and provide post-surgical care according to approved laboratory protocols.
- Prepares and administers special diets for mice.
- Performs animal perfusion and tissue sampling.
- Conducts immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence analysis on brain slices.
- Performs molecular biologic experiments that include Western blotting, protein-protein interaction assays, PCR, subcellular organelle isolation, and cell biologic studies.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- High school degree required.
- Priority will be given to those with a strong record of scholarly achievement.

- Strong communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Prior experience working with research animals is desirable.
- Experience operating standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, culture hoods, incubators, PCR machines, shaking incubators and plate reader.

Physical Demands and Work Environment |
- Physical Demands: Incumbent to be physically capable of performing the above duties, including handling small rodents following training, pipetting, measuring weights and volumes accurately, standing on feet, walking to other buildings on the campus and to the animal facility. Occasionally, certain items in the laboratory may need to be lifted, such as small equipment, boxes and bottles.
- Work Environment: Lab environment. Moderate noise.
