Kummer Student Programs

Job Description

This position supports the operations, safety, staffing, and events programmed for the Makers Studio. They will develop and facilitate co-curricular programs to promote innovation, and entrepreneurial skill sets for students at S&T through campus-wide collaboration. Also, expanding the supports and funding through community industry, and alumni relations to support the ongoing operations of the Makers Studio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development of training material and the delivery training, coaching, and engaging in positive student interaction
  • Demonstrate proper equipment functions to machine operators
  • Coach students in safe approaches to complicated manufacturing products and processes
  • Continually observe and assess users of the Maker Studio for understanding of content, adherence to safety protocols, and effective instruction
  • Recruit student employee staff through both work study and department budget processes
  • Train and supervise student employees including development of most effective operating hours for the Makers Studio each semester
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to students in effective leadership approaches
  • Make decisions related to prioritization of limited space, equipment, and machinery, and integrate the students' technical and research needs into decision.
  • Ensure student workers have the required supplies to complete their tasks
  • Assign tasks to student employees that contribute to and sustain a safe, clean, and productive work environment
  • Coordinate with University Advancement and community outreach to expand funding support for the Makers Studio through donations, in kind contributions, contracted services, and grants
  • Ensure proper and safe operating condition of machinery and equipment by performing regular maintenance, including but not limited to cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting parts; observing and testing the operation of machinery and equipment to identify broken or work components and/or diagnose malfunctions, using analytical tools or other testing devices
  • Design, plan, execute, and assess programs in the Makers Studio to promote students' development of design & build, innovation, and entrepreneurial skill sets
  • Collaborate with other departments on campus to support students' holistic and unique development across disciplines and experiences
  • Collaborate with and support student organizations that share similar outcomes and missions with the Makers Studio
  • Oversee the operating and supply budget for the Makers Studio
  • Anticipate student machinery needs as well as software and safety support and adequately budget for these needs
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of shop and safety consumables
  • Procure personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, face shields and masks, etc. for team and shop manufacturing
  • Anticipate and procure fabrication material needs for specific events and programs hosted in the Makers Studio
  • Select, order, coordinate gifts in kind, and/or purchase inventory
  • Follow all departmental and university procedures and timelines for tracking expenses, submitting receipts, etc.
Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of experience with makers spaces
  • One year operating a makers space which serves young adult or college user audience
  • One year supervising staff
  • Prior experience with developing trainings and events for makers spaces
  • Prior experience with managing operating budget and staffing for a makers studio
  • Master's degree and five years of experience
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $52,223-$73,008 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
