Job duties

Serve as a member of the summer language, culture and linguistics outreach team providing
public presentations to prospective incoming freshman and transfer students and their families about language programs and opportunities at the University of Minnesota. Most presentations are in person, on campus. Assist with planning and administration, and collaborate with language program representatives, ensuring that presentations represent all the languages available at the university, and resonate with a diverse audience.

Responsibilities

Presentation and outreach 80%

  • Help develop presentation materials about language, culture and linguistics programs.
  • Lead public presentations to prospective and incoming university students and their families, primarily in person.
  • Answer student and family questions and provide resources as requested.
  • Communicate with the outreach team on the effectiveness of presentation materials and adapt them as necessary.

Planning and coordination 20%

  • Assist with presentation scheduling, ensuing all sessions have a representative from the team, and a representative from a language program.
  • Bring print materials, and required technology to presentations.
  • Assist with materials collection for the staff responsible for staffing the info fair tables.
  • Assist with the planning of summer and academic year events.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at
    least four years.
  • Minimum of one year experience working in higher education
  • Experience working with high school and/or undergraduate students
  • Experience learning a second language
  • Experience working with non-native English speakers and diverse populations
  • Public speaking experience
  • Marketing or promotional experience
  • Design experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA, BS or equivalent degree in a language program or linguistics
  • Experience presenting to a large audience
  • Project and/or event management experience
  • Experience designing print and electronic materials in Canva
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $21.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
