POSITION PURPOSE
Andersen is looking for a responsible, respectful, and extroverted individual with excellent customer service skills to serve as a deckhand for summer boat trips on Andersen's historic Glengarry boat. The position is responsible for ensuring guests of the Glengarry have a safe and enjoyable experience on excursions down the St. Croix River. The deckhand will provide a second set of eyes to the boat captain while on the river and should have a basic understanding of boating and boating safety. This is a part-time position and will be scheduled based on cruise reservations. Shifts will be approximately 2 hours in length, and may occur in the afternoon or early evening from late spring through September.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensure the safety of passengers and crew members.25%
  • Stand watch and look for other boats and dangerous obstructions in the water, as well as navigational aids like buoys or markers.20%
  • Handle lines and assist with anchoring the boat. 20%
  • Operate and maintain onboard equipment in case of an emergency. 10%
  • Help steer the vessel and monitor water depth if captain is unable.10%
  • Help unload and load cargo as needed.5%
  • Assist guests with questions pertaining to the Glengarry history and local area. 5%
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.5%
DIRECTION OF OTHERS
This employee will report to the Events and Experience Supervisor. Specific on duty cruise direction will be given from the captain.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION, SKILL AND/OR COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Completed and current, or willingness to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Positive attitude
  • Decisive decision-making skills
  • Customer first mindset
  • Must be able to regularly lift and / move up to 50 pound
  • Specific vision abilities require excellent distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception
  • Must be able to stand for length of cruise, balance, kneel, crouch, and climb stairs frequently
  • Ability to swim

PROFIT SHARING: In 2025 Andersen has set a profit sharing target of $3,500 per eligible employee, prorated as appropriate. Profit sharing will be paid out in quarterly installments to provide eligible employees with payments throughout the year, with payment amounts tied to quarterly operating profit performance.
