THE POSITION

The Department of Corrections is seeking a motivated and creative Corrections Barber Instructor to join our team at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Mercer. By exhibiting strong leadership skills, you will help inmates achieve employable skills and certifications for them to use upon their release. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Corrections Barber Instructor, you will provide classroom instruction and on-the-job training to inmates in the standard practices, methods, and techniques of the barber trade. In this position, you will be required to maintain order and discipline of inmates during work assignments and classroom instruction. You can expect to maintain documentation of inmate training progress, attendance, and assignment details. You will oversee the provision of barbering services to the inmates at SCI Mercer. Some of your responsibilities will include issuing, inventorying, and requesting all materials and supplies for classroom instruction and assignments, as well as conducting searches to account for all materials and tools. Additionally, you will arrange for inmate students to take the Barber License test administered by the Pennsylvania State Board of Barbering when they are eligible.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:45 AM to 3:45 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $50,846.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Special Requirements:

  • All positions require possession of an active Barber Teacher License issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Barber Examiners.

Other Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must meet the PA residency requirement. For more information on ways to meet PA residency requirements, follow the link and click on Residency.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
