Acara Solutions client in the Aerospace & Defense industry is looking for a Linux Systems Administrator to join their team!
Location: Herndon, VA (Hybrid)
Duration: 6 Month Contract (Possibility to convert)
Pay Rate: $90.00 an hour (Depending on experience)
Job Summary:

We are seeking a Linux Systems Administrator to support the development and implementation of a CMMC-compliant infrastructure across our programs. The ideal candidate will have strong experience administering Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) (including Rocky Linux) and/or Ubuntu, with an emphasis on system hardening, security compliance, and automation. A solid understanding of NIST 800-171 and its application across Linux environments is essential.

This position plays a key role in ensuring that systems are compliant with security standards while remaining efficient and user-friendly for developers and system users. The role requires minimal supervision and will involve working closely with internal stakeholders across cybersecurity, IT, and development teams.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the configuration, administration, and hardening of RHEL, Rocky Linux, and Ubuntu environments in support of CMMC 2.0 and NIST 800-171 compliance.
  • Perform complex software installations, upgrades, and patch management in accordance with IT policies and cybersecurity requirements.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and technical documentation for Linux systems.
  • Monitor system performance and conduct tuning and optimization to maintain high availability and efficiency.
  • Evaluate, implement, and manage security controls, including SELinux, LDAP integration, and multi-factor authentication (MFA) solutions.
  • Work closely with developers and end-users to ensure that security controls are non-disruptive to operational workflows.
  • Conduct hardware and software audits of systems to verify compliance with internal policies and external regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in the modernization and automation of the Linux server infrastructure using tools such as Ansible.
  • Implement and support identity and access management solutions including FreeIPA, SSSD/Kerberos, and LDAP authentication across Linux systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on assessment readiness for CMMC 2.0, DFARS, and other regulatory frameworks.
Job Requirements
Required Skills / Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field and 5+ years of Linux system administration experience; or a Master's degree with 3+ years; or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with:
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
    • Ubuntu/Linux system hardening (CIS Benchmarks preferred)
    • SELinux, LDAP authentication, and Red Hat Ansible
  • Knowledge of NIST 800-171 controls and their implementation in Linux environments.
  • Familiarity with automation tools and scripting languages for infrastructure management.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills.
Preferred Skills / Qualifications:
  • Experience with:
    • CMMC 2.0 readiness assessments
    • Active Directory (AD) integration
    • FreeIPA installation and configuration
    • SSSD/Kerberos for identity integration
    • MFA implementation on Linux systems
  • Familiarity with DFARS and U.S. government cybersecurity regulations.
  • Prior experience in a DoD, defense contractor, or regulated IT environment.
