About the Role

The General Manager, Dutch Harbor position is directly responsible for the terminal operations in Dutch Harbor, AK, to ensure timely and safe movement of freight in the most efficient and economical way. Meet or exceed budget expectations and be able to make good decisions and lead the ever-changing operational challenges.

What you'll do:

  • Execution of Terminal Services Agreement(s)
  • Understand and enforce union contracts and participate in local labor relations committee and negotiations.
  • Resolve labor grievances by working with the labor union business agent.
  • Direct involvement in management of applicable workforce, to include work practices, productivity, and discipline.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with external customers.
  • Maintain operating budget, forecast equipment, and capital needs.
  • Coordinate land operations' activities with other terminals, division, and corporate departments, as well as with outside agencies.
  • Involvement in local community, interfacing with the city council and other local government agencies.
  • Accountable for efficient gate and yard operations which will expedite the movement of cargo through the port.
  • Maximize equipment operating efficiencies and productivity to meet or exceed standards. Ensure the monitoring and control of all equipment inventories, including reefers, tanks, gensets, and chassis. Improve profits via aging control.
  • Understand fishery seasons and quotas to anticipate customer needs.
  • Coordinate with the marine staff on work assignments, stevedoring operations, stowage planning, and vessel scheduling.
  • Develop relationships with labor, contract vendors, and governmental regulatory agencies, to include all terminal operations.
  • Manage implementation of Business Continuity Plan.
  • Maintain a safe and secure working environment for all employees.
  • Coach and mentor management team and assist with development of skills and behaviors, including feedback on performance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

You have these skills:

  • Accountability - Establishes clear responsibilities and processes for monitoring work and measuring results, and takes personal responsibility for decisions, actions, and failures.

And these qualifications:

  • Minimum 15 years' experience in ocean transportation management.
  • Strong managerial, supervisory, team-building, and decision-making skills.
  • Experience in developing, preparing, and managing operating budgets.
  • Ability to guide and inspire others to accomplish goals.
  • Experience managing and disciplining under union contract environment.
  • Ability to develop strategies, set priorities, and develop course of action to achieve objectives and results.
  • Anticipate needs, plan schedules, and handle multiple tasks and projects. Structure tasks and objectives, set priorities efficiently, and design and execute administrative systems. Prioritize and coordinate tasks to facilitate a smooth, timely, and productive workflow.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and internet. Aptitude to learn and master internal systems

Extra credit if you have:

  • BA degree in logistics transportation preferred.
  • Previous union negotiation experience preferred.
