The Musolino and Lindsay laboratories are a team of clinicians and scientist working to understand the genetics of brain and systemic vascular disease and develop novel therpaies. As translational laboratories we levereage disease expertise state of the art molecular, imaging, and gene-editing technologies to understand how single gene mutations alter vessels in order to find better therapies and improve the quality of life of patients suffering monogenic vascular disorders.
The Research Laboratory Operations Manager will work in collaboration with the principal investigators, center leaders and other personnel to support laboratory operations. This position is a combination of experimental and admistrative duties that oversees the daily operations of the research laboratory, including maintaining equipment, inventory, protocols, research inventories, daily budget, admistrative grant documetns, and related inquiries. The incumbent will also provide functional guidance to and train lab personnel. Will perform hands on experiments, including conduct routine molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, recombinant DNA cloning, DNA sequencing) and advanced imaging, with an emphasis on microscopy. Will manage mammalian cell culture, including iPSC-derived cells, and assist with animal husbandry.
Will apply experience in molecular biology, microscopy, and mammalian cell culture as well as contribute murine experience. Additionally, experience in induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) work is valuable along with interest in innovative delivery and genome engineering technologies. Contribute administrative experience in managing budgets, timelines, protocols, and grant submission files.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees and manages day-to-day laboratory operations as well as technical and research support activities conducted in the laboratory, collaborating with the principal investigators and others.
- Contributes to planning and reviewing the area's performance; resolves problems and issues as they arise.
- Coordinates and prioritizes research projects and experiments ensuring all activities are in line to meet research standards and goals.
- Ensures detailed documentation of experimental protocols, procedures, and outcomes in an electronic lab notebook, maintaining regulatory compliance and quality control standards.
- Troubleshoots and resolves technical issues related to laboratory equipment and experiments.
- Ensures all experiments and research projects as well as the laboratory are in compliance with regularoty requirements safety regulations; conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure compliance with regulatory standards; monitor and enforce laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
- Develops and manages lab-wide data storage solutions to ensure secure, organized access to research data for current and future studies.
- Carries out independent research projects which involve the execution of highly sophisticated techniques.
- Contributes to scientific literature and may present the results at hospital and outside meetings; may attend and/or present at scientific meetings and conferences.
- Provides administration of the lab in collaboration with the principal investigators, center leaders and other staff.
- Orients and trains new personnel in laboratory techniques, mentors staff for ongoing development, and promotes a culture of safety and excellence in lab procedures; serves as an ongoing resource to staff.
- Participates in hiring, performance evaluation, corrective action as needed.
- Coordinates and oversees assignment and work of students in the lab.
- Contributes to the financial management of the lab, including preparation of budgets, overseering the use of laboratory funds and supply inventory; analyzes trends and produces reports; processes reimbursements.
- Assists in preparing grant submissions and proposals, including writing and review.
- Manages administrative documents, overseeing data collection and storage, and maintaining data management systems.
- Manages lab space and equipment, including troubleshooting, service agreements and vendor relationships.
- Prepares, maintains and communicates documentation and manuals to support technical and operational needs; participates in the development and updating of lab policies.
- Attends and/or leads lab and departmental meetings.
- Represents the lab on department and hospital committees as needed.
- Performs other responsibilities and participates in meetings, workgroups and projects as assigned.
Bachelor's degree required in directly related scientific field. MS preferred. 7 years of progressively more responsible research laboratory experience as well as 1 one of management experience, including operational, financial and staff oversight. Technical experience must include performing molecular biology techniques (e.g., bacterial culture, molecular cloning, human cell culture, DNA sequencing, etc.).

- Knowledge of NIH awards and funding regulations.
- Must possess strong budget management skills.
- Understanding of and skill with databases and computer applications used in a research and administrative setting.
Duties will be performed in a research laboratory with typical conditions and hazards.Exposure may include chemicals and fumes.Physical requirements may include periods of prolonged sitting and standing. Work may include non-standard work hours to accommodate research, meetings, training or other needs.Travel to meetings and conferences may occur.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Daily functional oversight of a team of research technical staff as well as students.Provide functional guidance and administrative management for research fellows.
Financial management of lab in conjunction with PI and grants administrators with a budget over $5 million.
