About the opportunity

Do you thrive in the pursuit of selling environmental consulting services within the energy generation and transmission markets? Do you enjoy leading a team of professionals in the establishment and subsequent growth of sales, revenue, and brand within that market? SWCA is experiencing amazing growth and is seeking an Engineering Director supporting power and renewable energy services. This position will service the company nationwide, both for private and public sector clients, providing strategic thought leadership and direction for SWCA's business objectives, while being involved with the technical execution of engineering services in these markets.

The engineering services associated with the Power and Renewable Energy markets are expected to experience significant growth across the U.S. SWCA's continued growth in this area requires the addition of a visionary technical leader who partners with peers across the organization to continue to shape the direction of engineering technical services for SWCA's energy-related markets. This candidate will bring advanced technical leadership related to execution, innovation, and management of SWCA's engineering services within these markets.

The Engineering Director will have enterprise-level accountability for developing a strategic vision to expand engineering services across SWCA and will collaborate with other leaders to ensure that the vision supports SWCA's offices, clients, business lines, and other technical disciplines. The Director will be responsible for the quality of service across engineering practice areas in the Power and Renewable Energy Markets and will ensure that SWCA has leading design and compliance expertise and is employing state-of-the-art processes, methodologies, and tools.

The Engineering Director will lead complex projects or tasks specific to the engineering practice; develop standard methodologies and tools; establish measures of quality; mentor other water resources practitioners; lead or contribute to business development pursuits and management of strategic clients; and coordinate with other Directors, technical leads, and project managers to implement SWCA's engineering strategy.

The selected individual will be an experienced leader with recognized engineering expertise and a sound understanding of how engineering services are attained within an organization such as SWCA. The Director will report to SWCA's Vice President of Engineering Services.

This is a full time, regular status position, eligible to work in any of our offices, or 100% distributed in the domestic US.

What you will accomplish

As the Power and Renewable Energy Services Director, you will spend your time:

  • Developing and implementing a strategic vision for Energy-related Engineering services (50%):
    • Strategic planning for expansion of services with SWCA's clients and business lines.
    • Serving as technical authority and role model by setting a standard of excellence.
    • Lead and participate in professional networks for competitive advantages.
    • Ensure company and practice area QA/QC program is effectively implemented.
  • Positioning the Engineering practice to accelerate and support growth (35%):
    • Recognize and capitalize on market trends that impact the business.
    • Develop new business opportunities, and lead proposal efforts.
    • Serve as Technical Client Manager for key clients or business lines.
    • Lead or support go/no-go conversations pursuits in your area of expertise.
    • Represent SWCA as a thought leader and subject matter expert.
  • Providing mentoring, and coaching (15%):
    • Coordinate strategic initiatives with leading office and/or practitioners.
    • Build and retain a pipeline of technical talent.
    • Identify expertise gaps, identify/attract top talent, and advocate for strategic hires.
    • Serve as a technical mentor and role model for engineering practitioners.
    • Identify and foster the technical disciplines and standards necessary for growth.
  • Working with colleagues to ensure the quality and integrity of deliverables.
  • Demonstrating SWCA's seven core competencies (Action-Oriented, Client Focus, Collaborate, Decision Quality, Ensures Accountability, Instills Trust, Situational Adaptability) and three Technical Leadership Focus Area Competencies (Communicates Effectively, Manages Complexity, and Nimble Learning).

Experience and qualifications for success

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
  • Over fifteen (15) years of professional experience.
  • Over twelve (12) years of experience selling environmental and/or industry-related renewables and transmission services, with the ability to lead proposals.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience providing engineering consulting services, with a specific emphasis on the full range of energy- and power-related issues with increasing project management and technical responsibility, including leadership of others and management-level accountability for project or program performance.
  • Experience in other energy business lines (oil and gas, mining, etc.).

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Success in recognizing and capitalizing on market trends that impact the business.
  • Address complex design and permitting issues across multiple agencies, business lines, client types, and geographies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across offices and regions at all levels of the organization.
  • Broad understanding of regulatory requirements, technical disciplines, and emerging technologies.
  • Strong client-facing skills (e.g., communication, relationship building, problem solving).
  • Develop positive relationships with agencies at the local, regional, and national levels.
  • Consistent communication of highly technical concepts to diverse stakeholder groups.
  • A full understanding of financial metrics, with proven ability to manage complex projects.
  • Ability to direct high-quality, complex, interdisciplinary technical work.
  • Influencing the delivery of results, even in areas without direct authority.
  • Recognized mentor of others in the practice area to support SWCA's succession efforts.

An employee in this US-based position can expect an annual salary of $154,679-$200,304/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
