Chicago Department of Water Management

Bureau of Water Meter Services

Number of Positions: 1

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $82,692.00

This position is covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with THE CHICAGO JOURNEYMAN PLUMBERS UNION 130 (BARGAINING UNIT #16). Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid on these positions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES



  • Assigns, supervises, and inspects work activities of subordinates such as Water Rate Takers and Assessors.
  • May perform meter reading and assessing activities when or where necessary.
  • Prepares daily, weekly, monthly, and annual productivity reports as required.
  • Assigns, supervises, or conducts field inspections necessary to investigate customer complaints and verify questionable meter readings.
  • Assign and supervise the meter reading activities necessary to support the Full Payment Certificate process.
  • Reviews subordinate activity reports and other paperwork for completeness and accuracy to ensure that productivity standards are met.
  • Monitors GPS tracking to ensure subordinates are within their approved work area and routes.
  • Completes staff performance evaluations; administers disciplinary action where necessary.
  • Studies operations and procedures to make recommendations for improving efficiencies.
  • Will be required to utilize computers including desktop, laptop, tablets, smart phones, and other handheld meter reading equipment.
  • Use of Microsoft Office software applications such as Word and Excel along with the specialized utility billing software application.
  • Maintains work records and prepares detailed status reports for management review.
  • Conducts and oversees the training of new and existing staff related to meter reading activities, field inspections, property assessments necessary for billing purposes, and other services as requested.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Three years of work experience reading and examining water meters; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required.

NOTE: Must have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS: This position requires applicants to successfully pass a written test and complete an interview. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been analyzed and compiled. The interviewed candidate(s) receiving a passing score on the test and possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement.
