Fire Alarm Technician -Fire Systems Shop

Requirements

The Fire Alarm Technician is responsible for working independently to maintain, repair, service, modify, test, troubleshoot, and replace fire/life safety equipment throughout Georgetown University facilities. This position has been designated as essential personnel, and as such will be expected to report to work or work extra time even if the University is officially closed during emergency situations, such as inclement weather. Non-exempt employees will receive overtime if appropriate.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Monitor the operation fire protection systems and analyze system alarms to take necessary steps for ensuring continuity of fire alarm system coverage.
  • Respond to system supervisory or trouble alarms as directed by supervisor.
  • Determine the cause of system supervisory/trouble alarm and effects repairs if possible.
  • Perform scheduled inspection, testing, and routine preventative maintenance of fire alarm systems.
  • Escort and assist contracted installation, service, and repair of fire protection systems.
  • Communicate with outside vendors and consultants on project related issues.


Work Interactions

The incumbent will report to the Director of Engineering and will be directed on a day to day basis by the fire systems shop manager; additionally, will liaise with the university fire marshal, GUPD, facilities management, and project management as necessary to provide essential system information and status. The incumbent will collaborate with project management, facilities management, and building occupants for coordination/execution of activities as directed.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • High School Diploma
  • At least 12 months of fire alarm systems experience, including alarm and detection, notification, sprinkler monitoring, and relayed interfaces and controls for other building systems
  • Must pass the NICET level I Exam for fire alarm systems within 12 months of hire and be physically capable of making repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, as parts of systems worked on are in a hard-to-reach place
  • Must be comfortable standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions
  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds; Work is done inside and outside, and can be dirty, dusty, and greasy
  • Comfort with occasionally making repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present
  • Has frequent exposure to the possibility of scrapes, burns, and infections. Potential exists to work around hazardous materials and permit required confined spaces.
  • Applicant must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing on matters concerning fire protection and life safety systems in regards to testing of system applications, reporting on system conditions, conveying mitigation options for impaired systems and other complex technical issues

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$26.26 - $48.32

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
