Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin Law School, located in beautiful Madison, Wisconsin, is looking for full-time faculty to teach our required 3-credit Legal Analysis, Advocacy and Writing I and II courses in the fall and spring semesters. Both courses develop core skills necessary for law practice, including legal analysis and reasoning, research sources and strategy, and concise, clear writing. In the fall, faculty teach legal analysis and reasoning, research sources and strategy, predictive writing, and other related skills. In the spring, faculty teach analysis and argumentation from an advocate's perspective, persuasive writing, legal correspondence, and oral advocacy skills.

Although faculty follow the program's policies and guidelines to ensure fairness across sections, they develop their own course materials, including lesson plans, in-class exercises, and research and writing assignments. Faculty provide critiques of their students' research and writing projects and meet with students in individual conferences outside of class time. Faculty also hold weekly office hours to address general questions and concerns.

Faculty are expected to attend training sessions and planning meetings with an experienced, friendly, and collaborative group of legal writing colleagues. They are expected to contribute ideas to improve skills instruction, as well as perform administrative tasks associated with instruction. Faculty work under the guidance and supervision of the program director, who is responsible for the overall design, policies, and development of our program of instruction.


Responsibilities:
Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction associated with more than one lecture or laboratory course, assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.

  • 10% Works with faculty to identify and develop new methods of advancing instruction in the discipline
  • 5% Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • 25% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and may train other staff in use of these techniques
  • 50% Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • 5% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • 5% May make presentations to faculty and to staff members on instructional programs and techniques

Qualifications:

Previous law practice experience required. Previous teaching experience preferred but not required. Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work both independently and collegially as part of a team. Strong academic record and current law license strongly preferred.

After a one-year probation period, this position is renewable. Opportunities for advancement in rank or title may also be available after the probation period.
