Goals and Purpose

Through on the job learning and participation in apprenticeship classes, understand machine setup and learn to operate manual and CNC grinding equipment in order to produce components to customer specifications.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Productivity



  • Operate and understand manual and CNC grinding equipment (such as cylindrical and Blanchard grinders, and Studer grinding centers)
  • Understand travelers, job orders, and prints to determine processes, machine set-up and order of operations
  • Read blueprints and grind carbide components according to blueprint specifications
  • Attend on-site apprenticeship classes in addition to on-the-job learning. This is an in-house certificate program leading to a Journeyman title upon completion of the 4-year training program
  • Perform well in class and on the shop floor, asking relevant questions about processes or tasks not

    understood.
  • Ask for help with shop floor tasks or class assignments as needed



2. Quality Orientation



  • Verify conformance of finished workpiece to specification using precision measuring tools (such as

    micrometers, calipers, gauges, etc...)
  • Help implement and follow all safety and quality plans in accordance with company programs and policies


3. On-Time Delivery



  • Meet all class assignment deadlines
  • Work in teams to complete assigned tasks correctly and on time
  • Sort jobs by due date and complexity



4. Customer Service



  • Ensure commitments to customers are met
  • Facilitate teamwork with internal customers



5. Continuous Improvement



  • Gain an understanding of how your assigned Team contributes to overall Penn United goals.
  • Follow all safety and quality plans in accordance with company programs and policies.
  • Strive for continuous improvement.
  • Perform general cleanup daily of equipment and work area.
  • On own initiative, or as properly directed, perform other related duties necessary to ensure the proper

    functioning of the group toward achieving its goals.




6. Training



  • Attend and participate in Team meetings as required.
  • Strive to be fully cross trained on all pertinent equipment.

Qualifications

Qualifications



  • High school diploma or equivalent; some vocational-technical training in Machining preferred, not required
  • Technical, mechanical, and mathematical ability
  • Knowledge of blueprint reading, and precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc. strongly preferred
  • Prior experience with grinding machines, lathes or mills is preferred
  • Desire to learn and ability to apply knowledge to on-the-job tasks
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts or able to commit to a steady afternoon or midnight shift
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and stand 8-10 hours per day
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Service attitude; commitment to excellence in safety and quality
