GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Bariatric Office LPN assists physician with examinations and procedures to serve the medical needs of bariatric patients in a professional, confidential and caring manner. Coordinates the flow of patients, phone calls, lab work and supplies to facilitate quality patient care and patient satisfaction. Facilitates access to medical center services through use of a computer based scheduling system or telephonic communications to meet customer needs. Obtains medical necessity/diagnosis, patient demographic and financial information and documents pre-certification, authorization and referral information appropriately.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Greets patient, collects subjective and objective data and contributes to the assessment and re-assessment of the patient; documents appropriately in the patient chart; assists the physician with all examinations and procedures.

3. *Retrieves messages and responds to calls from patients, pharmacies, hospitals and other medical offices via telephone and computer in a timely manner and as directed by the physician.

4. *Maintains flow of patients in accordance with time of appointment in order to avoid delays for the physician and undue waiting for patients.

5. *Keeps exam rooms clean, disinfected and stocked with necessary supplies; maintains a neat, organized and safe environment for the patients and staff.

6. *Schedules inpatient/outpatient diagnostic and therapeutic tests/procedures; secures required patient demographic information including applicable physicians, medical necessity/diagnosis and pertinent clinical information as related to the procedure being scheduled; documents pre-certification/authorization/referral information when applicable.

7. *Explains tests/procedures and preparation as needed for adequate patient education.

8. *Reviews outpatient orders from the physician and/or physician staff; uses clinical judgment to review and follow-up, on appropriateness, and completeness, of physician orders as they relate to test or procedure ordered.

9. Assists in patient scheduling, retrieving patient demographic information and canceling patient appointments as needed.

10. *Responsible for compliance with OSHA and safety plans of the practice.

11. Reads and follows policies and procedure manuals for the practice.

12. Inventories supplies and orders appropriate amounts as needed.

13. Assists the Bariatric Nurse Navigator with special projects as assigned.

14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Maintains clinical competency as required for Licensed Practical Nurse licensure.

2. Knowledge of nursing theory, practice application/techniques and clinical systems.

3. Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to nursing practice, OSHA and HIPAA requirements.

4. Knowledge of general office procedures including the ability to maintain a filing system and standard clerical techniques.

5. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

6. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

7. Ability to integrate new work processes and adapt to change.

8. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, medical professionals and diverse patient populations.

10. Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate multiple tasks/projects with minimal supervision.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from a professional nursing program is required. Current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of Nebraska is required. Prior medical office experience preferred.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Current Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

(DOT) - Characterized as light work requiring exertion up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
