Role Description

Form Energy is hiring a Senior Staff Materials Engineer to join our world-class Anode Design and Performance Team. Our Team role is to continuously improve the understanding, design, and validation methods for Form Energy's iron negative electrode (i.e. anode).

As part of our Anode Design and Performance Team, you will mature our anode technology taking promising technologies from R&D, rapidly screen and optimize them, and scale these with our internal and external manufacturing partners and material suppliers. Activities include formulating, characterizing, testing, and creating specifications for new iron electrode materials and processes. As a Senior Staff Engineer you will be expected to be able to take complex projects from vague concepts through detailed execution, and mentor more junior staff to do the same. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and be part of the growth of a fast-moving company with breakthrough technology and an incredible mission!

What you'll do:
  • Prioritize safety as you carry out the entire electrochemical testing and battery operation process, ranging from the design phase, to implementation, and finally to post-test investigation

  • Create materials specifications for components of Form Energy's electrodes backed by property <> product performance linkages and understanding of electrochemical mechanisms

  • Lead project teams to develop new anode materials and processes

  • Design, execute, and interpret anode electrochemical tests in large- and lab-scale test vehicles

  • Characterize electrode materials pre- and post-test in collaboration with our internal material experts and external vendors. Develop characterization techniques where needed

  • Mentor, guide, and support team members with your expertise and practical experience

What you'll bring:
  • 12+ years of experience in electrochemically-focused (aqueous preferred) and/or metallurgical (preference for iron-based) materials engineering.

  • Demonstrated experience in building property <> performance relationships for functional materials, through experimental design and statistical analysis, preference for electrochemical and battery systems

  • Hands-on practical experience with materials processing including powder materials processing or powder metallurgy, particularly in deployed and/or market-ready products.

  • Deep understanding of materials supply chains, how to collaborate with vendors on stock and custom materials, and ensuring quality.

  • Excellent mentoring, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to communicate at all levels of the organization from executive-level to working teams

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, or a related field, PhD preferred
