About the unit

Our medical genetics team is made up of geneticists and genetic counselors who offer up-to-date testing, diagnosis, and recurrence risk counseling to both pediatric and adult patients seeking care. Our goal is to try to help you and your family discover the underlying genetic cause of a condition, provide risk assessments for other family members, provide support and resources and discuss medical management options.

We offer evaluation, genetic counseling and testing options to patients who have a personal or family history of specific health or developmental issues that may be caused by an underlying genetic condition. Our team attempts to determine the cause of birth defects, developmental delays, autism spectrum disorders, complex medical histories, and uncommon combinations of physical features.

About Outpatient Clinics

Corewell Health operates over 300 outpatient clinics across Michigan, bringing a multitude of care options to the communities that we serve. There are over 40 different types of primary care and specialty practices, which allows those who work in these clinics the opportunity to learn and explore various interests or to specialize in one area.

Scope of work

Under the direction of clinical geneticists (MD/DO) and /or certified genetic counselors (CGC), the genetic counselor assistant (GCA) will be responsible for supporting the counseling, testing, and diagnosis provided by the clinic. The GCA will interview patients and document personal and family medical history prior to patient visit, coordinate joint visits with the CGCs, MD/DO, RDs and other ancillary staff, obtain testing authorization and approval, prepare samples for transportation to laboratories within and outside of HDVCH, facilitate follow up with referring healthcare providers and laboratory personnel and other patient preparation and follow up tasks to support the clinic staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Biology or related field strongly preferred
  • 1 year of relevant experience patient/family contact in a community or medical setting, previous experience with clinical projects either in an administrative or clinical role, demonstrated knowledge of medical practice terminology required
  • 1 year of relevant experience Prior Authorizations Experience preferred
