Job Overview

The University of Cincinnati, College of Engineering and Applied Science invites applications for a Manager of College Laboratory, full-time staff position. The Manager of College Laboratory will be responsible for technical management of assigned research or instructional support facility or laboratory in a university academic/research department and assumes primary responsibility for facility operations.

Essential Functions

  • Manage the activities of the new undergraduate teaching laboratories in the renovated Old Chemistry building and assist faculty in setting up lab courses.
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and maintain safety programs for the laboratories, including the preparation of standard operating procedures.
  • Order equipment, parts, and chemicals and maintain inventory for laboratory consumables.
  • Maintain accurate records of all laboratory activities.
  • Evaluate and communicate the condition of existing equipment to designated instructor(s) /administrator. Work with designated instructor (s) / administrator to justify and prioritize equipment repairs, upgrades, and replacements as well as maintenance contracts.
  • Arrange for the prioritized upgrade, maintenance and repair of existing equipment as well as the purchase of new equipment; this may require coordinating the efforts of college technicians in the repair, design, engineering, and build of equipment; includes responsibility for procurement activities such as submission of purchase requests.
  • Work with the designated instructor (s) /administrator to develop unit procedures including preparing equipment schedules for use during laboratory teaching sessions.

Additional Essential Functions

  • Develop equipment training procedures; train students in the safe use of equipment, maintain record of training, communicate and enforce health and safety practices and procedures related to the operation of the lab; demonstrate care and use of equipment; and work with the designated instructor(s)/administrator on the training of graduate/undergraduate teaching assistants as well as additional instructors.
  • May serve on various university, division and departmental committees.
  • May manage/assign the work of College technicians; ensure proper workflow of the unit; act as lead worker.
  • May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or a a related field.
  • Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

Three (3) years in a laboratory environment or three (3) years of relevant experience as defined by the college/department.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Ability to solve complex technical problems
  • Strong spoken and written communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of Word and Excel to create and format documents and spreadsheets and ability to learn and adapt to new software as the need arises
  • Knowledge of safe laboratory operations and procedures

Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
