Are you passionate about water safety and looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference this summer? The Parks and Gardens Department of New Hanover County is currently seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Lifeguards.
Lifeguards, under supervision, maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool and deck areas, and build positive relationships with guests and program participants through effective listening and verbal skills.

Responsibilities for this role include:
- Maintain constant surveillance of assigned pool area, know/review all emergency procedures, and respond to emergency situations immediately. Assist in communicating emergency situations outside of assigned area.
- Communicate and enforce all facility policies, rules, and regulations.
- Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies.
- Perform first aid when necessary and complete appropriate incident/accident reports.
- Respond to citizen inquiries and concerns, and provide pool information as needed.
- Perform daily routine chores and maintenance of pool facility to ensure neat and orderly appearance.
- Provide superior customer service to all guests by assisting all in a polite and expedient manner.
- Participate in all park safety and quality drills.
- Attend all required training, including lifeguard certification classes (if needed).

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Lifeguard certification is preferred, but training for certification will be provided for qualified applicants who are not certified.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to pass lifeguard water test
- Must be able to pass a pre-test to participate in lifeguard certification training which includes a 300-yard swim, two-minute tread and a deep water dive to retrieve a ten-pound brick."
- Ability to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness in an outdoor environment.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, including in an elevated chair.
- Hear noises and distress signals in surroundings.
- Observe all areas of the pool with clear vision.
- Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in in a dynamic, potentially loud environment.
- Perform all needed rescues, resuscitation and survival skills.
- Think in abstract, solve problems and make quick decisions.
