Primary Purpose of Organization Unit |
Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Facilities, Facilities Management comprises of two departments - Facilities Operations; and Facilities Planning and Construction. The primary mission is delivering required services, financial oversight, and providing a liaison with appropriate Federal, State, and local agencies on matters related to planning, constructing, operating and maintaining the physical campus environment.
Facilities Management strives to provide a safe, clean, accessible, and attractive environment which enhances the abilities of academic and administrative departments to provide a personalized education experience. |
Primary Purpose of Position |
Performs all duties associated with maintenance and care of our landscape ornamentals and lawns, under the supervision of the Ground Manager. Duties will consist of installations, maintenance and care of woody herbaceous plant material, annual color plantings and turf care. Ensures irrigation systems are applying correct volume of water to match the season. Prepares areas for new turf and seasonal seeds for various areas for turf, shrubs, trees and flowers. Protect plants from pests and diseases by applying seasonal pesticides and herbicides. Work includes installation of all new plant material following plans and/or approved horticultural/grounds practices and procedures; maintaining the beds including pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing and spraying of plant material, which may include pesticides. Lays small portions of sod as appropriate to the requirements of the sports complex. Picks up and disposes of litter. Operates grounds equipment including riding mowers, sprayers, aerators, and/or small tractors. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. May perform general maintenance, custodial, and trash removal tasks. Oversees the work of employees in a lead supporting role, including assigning workload and monitoring employee performance. Performs snow removal, as required Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
This position is Mandatory Personnel: Employee whose presence has been determined to be mandatory to University operations during certain types of adverse weather or emergency events. |
Job Description |
Performs wide range of landscape maintenance tasks important to the preservation, protection, and display of landscape beds, including but not limited to soil preparation, planting, transplanting, mulching, weeding, irrigation, fertilizing, pesticide/herbicide applications, tree work etc.. Maintains care of tools, equipment and university property. Exercises quality mowing, string trimming, and stick edging. Ensures all applicable safety standards are followed. Adapts or modifies work methods to reduce hazards, reports accidents and injuries. Works with irrigation systems which includes, nozzle replacements, replacing heads, pipe repairs, and recognizing ineffective stations |
Management Preference |
Knowledge of grounds maintenance and turf equipment operations. Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures. Knowledge of fertilizer and/or pesticide applications. Knowledge of turf propagation techniques. Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. Ability to lay sod. Ability to lead and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. 2-3 years' experience in horticultural gardens or similar environment. |

Valid Driver's License. Pesticide License or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date. |
