The Associated Press seeks an engagement editor to join our growing team of diverse journalists focused on digital audiences. We're looking for journalists with curiosity, drive and creativity. You're someone who has a rich understanding of how news travels on site, search, newsletters and other platforms.

This role will bring news and information during the busiest time of AP's audience cycle, reporting to the news editor covering mornings for APNews. For this position based in any U.S. city with an AP bureau, the typical shift is 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday, with flexibility required to accommodate breaking news and special events. The AP is a hybrid workplace, with local daytime shifts worked in-office Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Tuesdays through Thursdays starting in May.This is a staff position covered by AP's agreement with the News Media Guild.

Responsibilities: Your day-to-day responsibilities will vary. You could be the lead homepage curator for that shift and running headline tests, or you could be the editor who's ensuring our stories are optimized for search, or you could be responsible for alerts and creating audience plans for major events coverage.

In each case, your primary responsibility will be to ensure that we are selecting, curating and promoting the best content that AP has to offer in text, photo, video, audio and interactives. You will also help develop audience-focused story ideas for AP reporting teams.

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, such as at least three years of full-time work as an editor, reporter or social media producer at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet or AP bureau.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in Spanish is a plus.
  • The ability and willingness to work outside of business hours to meet the demands of a 24/7 news cycle.
  • A commitment to innovation and inclusivity while upholding AP's standards for integrity and objectivity.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the United States or be able to gain permission to do so.



Preferred Qualifications: We're looking for digital natives with strong news judgment, a sharp eye for detail and a deep understanding of how to target and serve online audiences that come - and are guided to - AP's digital platforms. The successful candidate is someone who knows how to make a good headline great; who has their finger on the pulse of the conversation; who can make data-informed news decisions; and who can collaborate with - and complement the expertise of - AP journalists around the world. You should be someone who can thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, and you relish multi-tasking.

We're looking for someone who:



  • understands how to monitor and interpret metrics to serve and grow AP's diverse global audiences.
  • is adaptable and willing to learn new digital tools and workflows, such as headline workshopping, testing and optimization.
  • can quickly become conversant with every aspect of AP's all-formats news report.
  • has strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams of journalists and designers at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital, interactive and graphics.
  • is comfortable working with colleagues of varying digital skill levels and are eager to share knowledge and best practices.
  • will bring a solutions mindset to the work environment, ready to execute on the best ideas.

This position is covered by The Associated Press' contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $52,046 and $82,934 based on location and years of professional experience. AP may offer additional compensation based on a job candidate's skills, qualifications and market location.Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
