The Associated Press is looking for a live blog writer/editor to join our expanding team of diverse journalists committed to engaging digital audiences. If you're passionate about live news, thrive in fast-paced environments, and have a keen understanding of digital media, we want you on our team.

Based in Los Angeles, Seattle or Phoenix, you will work an afternoon/evening shift, Monday through Friday. This is a staff position covered by AP's agreement with the News Media Guild.

Responsibilities: As a journalist working on live blogs, you'll play a pivotal role in creating real-time news content for online platforms and guiding news consumers to APNews.com. Reporting to the news editor for live blogs, you will prioritize the creation of live blog content that resonates with online audiences, ensuring it is informative, visually appealing and engaging. You also will assist with coordination from major events, breaking news, awards shows, political speeches and daily news updates.

We're looking for someone who will:



  • Assist with the planning, execution, and editing of live blogs for breaking news events ensuring real-time updates and accurate information is provided to our audience.
  • Collaborate with reporters and contributors to maintain a cohesive narrative flow and deliver timely updates.
  • Commission and curate visual elements, such as photos, videos and graphics, to enhance text-based reporting.
  • Stay on top of updating SEO fields and display elements to ensure high search authority and rankings for major search queries.
  • Ensure all content adheres to editorial guidelines, upholding high standards of accuracy, clarity and timeliness.
  • Analyze performance metrics and traffic to refine future live blog strategies and improve content delivery.
  • Work closely with other digital team members to create a seamless cross-platform experience.
  • Lead trainings with editors and reporters in the rest of the newsroom on live blog best practices and how to use the CMS.



Required Qualifications:



  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, with at least one year of experience as an editor, reporter or social media producer at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, digital news outlet or AP bureau.
  • Advanced-level professional proficiency in both written and spoken English; proficiency in additional languages is a plus.
  • The ability and willingness to work early mornings, nights and some weekends to meet the demands of a 24/7 news cycle.
  • A commitment to innovation and inclusivity while upholding AP's standards for integrity and objectivity.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the United States or be able to gain permission to do so.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Proven experience with live broadcast or digital news.
  • A strong news sense and the ability to identify and promote stories that will resonate with readers.
  • Familiarity with best practices on content creation, search engine optimization, and social media strategy.
  • Ability to write clean, conversational copy on tight deadlines.
  • Strong teamwork and people skills, including the ability to collaborate with diverse teams of journalists and designers across different formats, such as text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive, and graphics.

This position is covered by The Associated Press' contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $52,046 and $82,934 based on location and years of professional experience. AP may offer additional compensation based on a job candidate's skills, qualifications and market location.Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
