About Nezami Lab

The Nezami Lab at Brigham and Women's Hospital (Harvard Medical School affiliate) focuses on solving critical challenges in cardiology and cardiac surgery through an integrated approach combining AI, biomedical engineering, and translational research. We leverage techniques from reinforcement learning, computational modeling, fluid dynamics, and image processing to design, evaluate, and optimize life-support devices such as prosthetic valves, stents, and mechanical circulatory assist systems. Our lab bridges silico modeling and real-world clinical applications to inform device design, risk prediction, and treatment strategy optimization.

Internship Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. or advanced Master's-level research intern for Summer 2025 to join our team in applying cutting-edge AI and machine learning techniques to cardiothoracic surgical risk modeling and decision support. This role is ideal for candidates with a strong foundation in reinforcement learning, deep learning, probabilistic modeling, and a passion for applying these tools to high-impact biomedical applications.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and evaluate AI/ML models for analyzing cardiovascular data streams, including physiological signals and patient monitoring records.
• Apply reinforcement learning (RL) and Bayesian inference to optimize clinical decision-making under uncertainty, particularly for predicting adverse outcomes following cardiac surgery.
• Contribute to the development of time-series and physics-informed neural networks for hemodynamic simulations and cardiac device modeling.
• Integrate multimodal data (e.g., EHR, imaging, waveform data) to build predictive models for patient stratification and surgical planning.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, data scientists, and engineers to translate research into clinical applications.
• Support manuscript preparation, conference submissions, and internal lab presentations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong coding skills in Python, with hands-on experience using PyTorch, TensorFlow, and scientific computing libraries (NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn).
• Background in deep reinforcement learning, Bayesian statistics, and decision-making under uncertainty (e.g., bandits, MDPs).
• Familiarity with signal processing, medical imaging, or biomedical datasets (e.g., ECG, CT, MRI, EHR).
• Experience with transformers, LSTMs, or probabilistic modeling frameworks for time-series prediction or sequential decision tasks.
• Exposure to causal inference, Gaussian processes, or Bayesian optimization is a plus.
• Ability to work independently, communicate across disciplines, and contribute to collaborative research in a fast-paced environment.
