Minimum Qualifications

  • Master of Social Work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education
  • Two years of post-MSW practice experience

The Social Work Department especially seeks the following:

  • Experience with social work field education through being a seminar instructor, field instructor or comparable role/ position,
  • Evidence of a commitment to the NASW Code of Ethics and the social work profession's mission of social justice
  • Experience in teaching social work undergraduate or graduate courses
  • Excellent collaborative and organizational skills
  • Experience with aspects of the field placement process, including, but not limited to, supporting students, working with supervisors and agencies, managing application process, and developing remediation plans
  • Knowledge of social service agencies in Western NC including rural and urban settings.
  • Proficient with a variety of technologies and online systems
  • The ideal applicant will have more than 2 years of experience

Description of the Department or Unit
Appalachian State University's Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) is transforming the health and quality of lives of individuals, families, and communities through inclusive practices, interprofessional collaboration, and innovation in teaching, scholarship, service, and clinical outreach. The BCHS supports over 3,400 students in nine undergraduate and nine graduate degree programs, organized into six academic departments. The programs are located in Boone in the Holmes Convocation Center and the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, the cornerstone of Boone's Wellness District. We also have a presence on our new campus in Hickory. The college supports the Appalachian Institute for Health and Wellness and has a collaborative partnership with the Wake Forest School of Medicine's Physician Assistant Program and multiple health and human service agencies across the region. With approximately 400 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students, the Department offers face-to-face and online degree options. Guided by an overarching focus on social and economic justice, our mission is to educate professional social workers who actively work towards a sustainable and just society, focusing on the well-being and empowerment of the vulnerable and oppressed. Our programs prepare competent and ethical social workers for practice within the distinct Appalachian region, national, and international contexts. Both undergraduate and graduate students complete a practicum placement to integrate their coursework with experiences in social service and human service agencies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Instruction:

    • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in social work



  • Service:
    • Participating in service activities for the department, university, and community

  • Administrative:

    • Practicum placement coordination including meeting with students to assist in field placements, coordinating with agencies, finding new agencies, assisting in vetting agencies and field instructors, consulting with field instructors, and conducting orientations.
    • Serve on the field education committee, program committees, evaluation committee, ad hoc committees, and attend weekly meetings with the Field Director.
    • Facilitate and monitor educational placements to ensure educational quality
    • Assisting with field orientation
    • Update, manage, troubleshoot, Field Management System (Tevera)
    • Work closely with the leadership team to support students' success and address student challenges.
    • Collaborate with the Field Director on aspects of the field education program, including course and policy development and ongoing management
    • Routine travel to agencies and other position-related activities

Suggested Salary Range Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
