Senior Arts Technician - College of Fine Arts

Carnegie Mellon University's College of Fine Arts (CFA) School or Art is searching for a Senior Arts Technician to join their team. The School of Art is one of five schools within the College of Fine Arts, which also includes the Schools of Architecture, Design, Drama and Music. Benchmarks of the School include collaborative relationships with innovative learning environments such as the Center for Arts in Society, the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry and IDeATE; and a unique curriculum that includes social practice, critical theory, and technology alongside programs in electronic and time-based media, painting, drawing, and sculpture.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Primary liaison between School of Art and CMU Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and Facility Management Services (FMS) offices.

  • Assists and manages the onboarding and training of new staff technicians, student monitors, and student summer crew workers. Oversees' scheduling and project management of all student summer crew work in Doherty Hall.

  • Communicates on a regular basis with School of Art faculty and other Doherty Hall technicians to understand the needs and concerns of their spaces and oversee projects across all areas within Doherty Hall art facilities.

  • Establishes safety and training procedures throughout School of Art facilities in Doherty Hall.

  • Coordinates DH key distribution and key card access for students, faculty, and staff; Liaises with CMU lockshop as needed.

  • Manages classroom use and faculty and staff office/studio spaces; point of contact for faculty studio use, upkeep, and crisis management; oversight of cleaning protocols (both self-cleaning and COVID mitigation efforts as well as broader coordination with CMU janitorial and FMS departments).

  • Manages Undergraduate Studio Space in Doherty Hall. Assists with the studio assignment process; Oversees maintenance and upkeep of the spaces; Communicates with students when issues arise.

  • Through CMU Facility Management Services (FMS), makes work requests and manages small and large-scale projects related to the physical spaces of Doherty Hall (such as renovations, repairs, deep cleanings, and the installation of new equipment).

  • BioRaft and Chemtracker administrator.

  • Oversight of DH area budgets and accounting categories.

  • Works with Business Manager + Finance Assistant on justification process for purchases - Purchasing / Procurement for Faculty teaching in DH / classrooms - works closely with technicians for other purchasing/procurement needs. Builds and maintains systems for making procurement requests.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Support for Foundations Faculty who teach in B309 - including class preparedness and material procurement; Calendar scheduling for critique space in B309.

  • Sets up service agreements/contracts (including master service agreements) / Get quotes for high price items when needed.

  • Management of DH Critique Space (C316) - including upkeep and reservations.

  • Doherty Hall Student Monitor Coordination works with technicians to design and manage hiring and onboarding processes including scheduling and enforcing safety trainings;

  • Communicates with student workers as needed regarding training, safety, schedules, and crisis management, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree.

  • 3-5 years of Relevant Work Experience.

  • Prior experience in facilities operations and/or administrative coordination, preferably in an academic or art studio environment.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills.

  • Familiarity with safety protocols and facility management systems is highly desirable.

  • Experience supervising staff and student workers is preferred.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively with varied stakeholders.
