This position is responsible for providing global support to Smith & Nephew sites where Analytical Chemistry testing is required. This position will be focused primarily on extractable and leachables testing of medical devices related to the ISO 10993 Biocompatibility Guidance. The successful candidate will work on multiple projects applying a wide range of analytical techniques including GC-MS, ICP-MS and LC-MS. The Scientist works to the highest standards to support Smith and Nephew's ongoing research and new product development (NPD) programs, product support and non-conformity testing. Scope of work will include not only supporting internal customers but as, and when required, external collaborators.

What will you be doing?

  • Work within a cross-functional team of engineers and scientists to deliver on agreed milestones for new product development, early phase evaluations and legacy products.

  • Depending on the project needs; implement experiments that will satisfy regulatory and internal requirements.

  • Work with minimal supervision from Senior Scientists.

  • Help develop and execute analytical methods using a variety of analytical techniques including FTIR, GC-MS, GPC, HPLC, ICP-MS, LC-MS and SEM-EDS.

  • Comply with the laboratory management practices set-up by the laboratory manager including S&N global health, safety and environmental practices.

  • Work within the framework of international standards (e.g. ISO 10993 and ISO 17025) and ensure compliance.

  • Assist laboratory team to create and update work instructions for safe and effective use of equipment in the laboratory.

  • Operate laboratory equipment, including managing maintenance and calibration with internal and external resources.

  • Perform administrative functions as necessary (objective setting, development plans, training, self-appraisal etc).

  • Write technical reports and ensure maintenance of complete and accurate records for all controlled documentation.

  • Other miscellaneous activities include attending meetings, submitting financial/travel requests, and making presentations.

What will you need to be successful?

  • Education:

    • B.S. or M.S. in Chemistry required.

Experience:

  • BS with at least 0-4 years of hands-on experience.

  • MS with 0-3 years of hands-on experience. Prior experience with any of the techniques listed would be a distinct plus. Internship experience in a lab would be advantageous.

  • Must have good team and communication skills.

  • Must have good time management skills. Should be able to work under minimal supervision once trained.

  • Travel Requirements: < 5%
