About the Job

The Associate Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is a key leadership and management role in the college, and as a campus leader, the Associate Dean collaborates across campus on a variety of projects and initiatives.

Reporting to the Dean of CAHSS, the Associate Dean provides leadership in a number of areas for CAHSS, including being the primary interface between the Dean's Office and students and faculty, addressing student and faculty concerns, student recruitment and retention, representing the college on campus-wide committees, collaborating closely with the CAHSS Advising Office, onboarding new faculty, and organizing other initiatives and projects as directed by the Dean. The Associate Dean serves on the CAHSS Administrative Committee as well as the CAHSS Curriculum Committee, working in close partnership with the Dean, the CAHSS department heads, and the students, staff, and faculty of the college to promote its educational objectives. This is a full-time, 12-month position that reports directly to the Dean. The starting salary will be within the range of $105,700 - $130,200 depending on experience and other factors.

Position Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the CAHSS Associate Dean include, but are not limited to:

College operations, policy implementation, & campus leadership (25%)

  • Advising the Dean on policies related to faculty, students, and college operations and ensuring effective dissemination and implementation within the college.
  • Representing the college on campus committees and workgroups such as the Council of Associate Deans, Strategic Enrollment and Collegiate Admissions Committees, and Campus Curriculum Steering Committee, among others as assigned.
  • Serving on the CAHSS Administrative Committee and CAHSS Curriculum Committee.
  • Collecting and analyzing data and offering guidance for collegiate space usage, faculty and staff hiring, and other strategic priorities for the college.
  • Promoting collaborative goals centered around diversity, equity, and inclusion within the college.
  • Working in collaboration with the Dean and Administrative Manager on collegiate initiatives and projects, daily management of the college, long-term goal planning, and developing and monitoring the college's budget.

Student recruitment, retention, & success (25%)

  • Leading the college's efforts related to student recruitment and retention.
  • Working closely with the CAHSS Advising Office on welcome week, orientation for new and transfer students, student retention, and various campus outreach and admissions programming as they develop.
  • Taking an active role in promoting student scholarships, as well as collaborating effectively with UofM System and UMD campus coordinators to facilitate the college's Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP).
  • Collecting and analyzing data necessary to evaluate course enrollments and enrollment trends.
  • Working closely with Strategic Enrollment Management and Marketing to provide guidance and oversight for college outreach.

Faculty affairs & development (20%)

  • Overseeing ongoing orientation programming for new faculty members.
  • Collaborating with senior leaders on programming that supports CAHSS faculty members.
  • Mentoring faculty and providing guidance on professional development, including teaching and learning support.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflict and meet objectives and goals.
  • Amplifying and connecting CAHSS Marketing and Communication strategies and initiatives.

Academic planning & course scheduling (20%)

  • Serving as liaison between the college and the Office of the Registrar on course scheduling, modality, and summer session.
  • Collecting and analyzing data necessary to evaluate course enrollments, enrollment trends, space usage, and strategic priorities for the college.
  • Providing communication and guidance for best practices around workload, teaching and learning, and program analysis processes

Other duties as assigned, and areas of specialization (10%)

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Tenured faculty member in CAHSS at the time of appointment.
  • Minimum of one year of successful administrative experience.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty and staff in all CAHSS departments and programs.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Capacity to connect students with well-being resources.

Desired Qualifications

  • Three years of successful administrative experience.
  • Experience coaching, training, and mentoring faculty.
  • Experience using data analysis to support decision making.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflict.
  • Commitment to the continuous review and strengthening of academic and outreach programs
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $105,700 - $130,200; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
