Allergy Mixing Clinician

Serves as the primary clinical support for allergy testing and ongoing immunotherapy. Function independently being responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of allergy supplies of the clinic.

• Assumes personal responsibility for development, practice, and education. Maintains an organized and safe work environment.
• Gather records, complies, organizes, and processes information within the EHR.
• Log, organize and maintain proper storage (including temperature control) of antigens and medications.
• Performs monthly inventory counts of antigens.
• Must be able to accurately interpret, confirm and prepare allergens as prescribed and instructed by allergist. Vial dilutions also to be performed accurately in conjunction with allergist's instruction/prescription.
• Must be able to correctly measure and mix ingredients for either percutaneous skin testing or intradermal testing and allergy injections.
• Mixing patient-specific antigen(s) and document each component in the EMR.
• Printing out and attaching a label(s) for the vial(s) with the proper patient demographic information.
• Assign each vial a unique identification number and color.
• Validates each vial component along with the vial and dosing information.
• Keeping the lab area clean and orderly. A dedicated allergenic extract compounding area (AECA) is to be maintained and enforced by this role. This AECA must be located away from unsealed windows, exterior doors, and away from public traffic flow. Work surfaces within the AECA must be at least 1 meter away from a sink and adequate air quality must be maintained throughout the AECA.
• Maintaining equipment and inventory of all supplies needed.
• Appropriately dispose of pharmaceuticals or allergens that are expired, adulterated, etc.
• Assure expired, outdated, adulterated or misbranded medications are not available for patient use.
• Seek out education and maintain knowledge of United States Pharmacopeia 797 (USP 797) standards for compounding sterile preparations.
• Maintain all kits, trays, vials, and other preparations in ready to use forms to facilitate timely patient care.
• Maintains annual mixing competencies from pharmacy specific to antigen compounding and aseptic technique.
• Establishes and maintains annual compliance and competency in preparation techniques, including aseptic technique, appropriate hand hygiene, garbing procedures (including proper gown, head covers, face mask and gloves), accurate measuring of various substances, and proper disposal of materials.
• Participates with quality measures.
• Adequately passes media-fill tests and gloved fingertip sampling per current USP 797 requirements.
• Assist in ensure adequate and appropriate charges are captured for services.
• Performs second check of allergy injections with nurse.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

• Minimum education requirement, High school graduate.
• Medical Terminology is desirable.
• Basic Life Saving (BLS) required within 6 months of hire.
