Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Student Affairs at the Gillings School of Global Public Health provides an array of services and resources to prospective, admitted and current students. We aim to enhance student development by providing a supportive and safe environment in which you can achieve academic, social and professional success.

We coordinate major schoolwide programs such as orientations, a student activities fair, a career and internship fair and professional development workshops. We work to recruit excellent students; coordinate diversity outreach programs to expose high school, undergraduate students and professionals to the field of public health; and offer career services for current students and recent alumni.

Position Summary

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the Senior Executive Director for Academic Advising and Student Support provides leadership for academic advising and student services in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. This position manages academic advising staff to include assistant directors and academic coordinators overseeing all aspects of academic advising to promote student success, academic excellence, retention, and degree or program completion.

This position works collaboratively with key stakeholders to implement, oversee, and assess advising programming and interventions and support services aimed at assisting student development and persistence towards degree or program completion. The Sr. Executive Director sets standards, establishes operational and programmatic goals, streamlines processes for the effective and timely provision of services to students, and works with others to enforce academic policies, improve administrative procedures, and decides petitions regarding exemptions and exceptions to academic rules and graduation requirements.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Demonstrated experience in academic advising or student support services.

Prior experience managing academic advising staff, including recruiting, training, or mentoring.

Demonstrated understanding of higher education policies, student success initiatives, and/or retention strategies.

Familiarity with compliance regulations (FERPA, Title IX, etc.) and institutional policies related to advising and/or student services.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

5 years of management experience in a university environment at a professional level with direct experience in staff development and supervision with significant engagement with both undergraduate and graduate students.

Master's degree with specific training and experience in counseling or student affairs.

Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills.

Experience working with diverse student constituencies; and demonstrated ability to work creatively with institutional policies and apply sound judgment in dealing with administrative issues.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
