West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech), a part of the WVU System of campuses located in Beckley, WV, is currently seeking applications for a Maintenance Worker II - Grounds.

About the Opportunity

A Maintenance Worker II - Grounds, provides work during the week Monday - Friday on a variety of support services in order to maintain the exterior appearance of the grounds. This work involves adhering to established standard procedures, techniques, and safety requirements with some judgment required to interpret instructions.

What you'll do:

Grounds - will be required to perform Roads and Grounds work; this will include, but is not limited to the following:



  • Clean and maintain the surrounding exterior appearance of all institutional buildings by raking, removing and disposing of leaves and debris; cleaning gutters, culverts, and other drainage areas; sweeping, shoveling, and removing snow, ice, slush, and mud from entryways and sidewalks; spreading salt and cinders on public passageways;
  • Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing and removing thatch, and trimming and edging around flower beds, walks, and walls. Haul or spread topsoil and spread straw over seeded soil to hold soil in place.
  • Required to operate various hand and power tools in the performance of duties such as: rakes, shovels, lawn mowers, weed-eaters, etc.
  • Performs winter duties associated with snow removal in their assigned areas, which may include using shovels, spreading salt, or operating a plow truck.
  • Operates, services and maintain all grounds equipment, such as trucks, tractors, large seeders, riding mowers, snow removal, skid loaders, tilt bed trucks and steep slope mowing equipment.
  • Required to dig holes and trenches and to spread and level dirt, gravel and concrete to assist in the installation of traffic signs, irrigation/drainage systems and concrete structures.
  • Remove weeds from shrubs and flowerbeds as required.
  • Washing graffiti from exterior walls and sidewalks; and performing other related external cleaning activities.
  • Resolve pest and insect problem across campus
  • Performs general tree maintenance as required.
  • Collect trash from exterior trash cans and take to trash compactor
  • Attend various training classes, seminars, and other meetings to learn new techniques and procedures and to remain current in all safety requirements.


Maintenance & Custodian



  • Will assist in the performance of general painting duties as instructed, such as: painting walls, ceilings, trim, and furniture using enamel/latex paints with brushes, rollers, and low pressure sprayers; patches and prepares surfaces for painting to include finishing drywall or similar tasks requiring basic painting skills. These tasks would be considered as non-technical, non-certified supporting duties.
  • Relocates offices and classrooms within buildings and throughout campus by lifting, loading and unloading furniture, files cabinets, boxes, etc. onto hand trucks, dollies, and box vans for transportation. May require removing desk components, doors, and shelves to ease in relocations. Moves, sets-up, rearranges, and erects tables, chairs, platforms, bleachers, tents, displays, etc. for concerts, registration, commencement, and other special events. Disassembles and stores items at the end of event.
  • Cleans and maintains the interior appearance of all buildings including classrooms, offices, laboratories, student housing, public areas, etc. by sweeping, mopping, stripping, and waxing floors; vacuuming and shampooing carpets, rugs, and upholstery; dusting and polishing furniture; washing and cleaning walls, ceilings, doors, windows (inside and out), washing graffiti from walls, lockers, bathroom stalls and doors, and performing other related internal cleaning activities.
  • Cleans and disinfects bathrooms and kitchenettes including walls, floors, lavatories, commodes, sinks, refrigerators, stoves, fixtures, mirrors, etc.
  • Change light bulbs, if the bulbs are not the problem, create a work order for others to repair.
  • Plunge toilets and floor drains as needed to unclog the drains and allow water flow.
  • Replenishes supplies including toilet tissue, towels, and soap. May be requires to unload and store supplies and to rotate stock and to obtain appropriate signatures on deliveries.
  • Locking and unlocking of exterior and interior doors.
  • May be required to operate various hand and power tools in the performance of duties such as: dollies, hand trucks, etc.
  • Collects and properly disposes of trash and litter throughout institutional buildings and grounds including cleaning of trash receptacles and assisting sanitation vehicle operators. Collects recyclable items and places in appropriate storage location.


Other



  • Create a work order if you detect an issue that needs repaired.
  • Order supplies or identify if equipment is not working.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or as directed.


Pay Grade: 11

Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in general grounds maintenance and landscaping
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Knowledge of building trades.
  • Ability to operate a computer.
  • Ability to follow OSHA guidelines and associated codes.
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools, parts, and materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain average or above work standards.
  • Ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to rapidly learn all policies and procedures impacting the affected area.
  • Ability to organize work flow to ensure all tasks are completed in a timely manner.
  • Ability to operate a state vehicle.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Ability to lift materials over 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a lift 30 feet above the ground
  • Ability to bend, stoop, walk, crawl, etc.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and HVAC, systems.
  • Ability to work in confined areas.
  • Ability to follow safety requirements and use proper safety equipment.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance such as changing filters, replacing light bulbs, and cleaning equipment and tools.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work such as digging a ditch, cleaning utility tunnels, pulling electrical cable, moving heavy equipment, shoveling snow, and the transporting and installation of materials.
  • Ability to follow specific directions on a general task.
  • Ability to use chemicals such as penetrating oil, glue, coil cleaner, paints, thinners, and lubricants.
  • Ability to handle/install insulating and filtration materials.
  • Ability to assist higher level trades technicians in facility repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate power tools such as saws, drills, and jackhammers.
  • Ability to erect and work from scaffold, ladders, and man lifts.
  • Ability to perform housekeeping duties on the job site and in the shop.
  • Ability to clean and maintain tools.
