This position reports to the Operations Manager and is responsible for providing management, coordination and continuous improvement of all aspects of the manufacturing process including: cost targets, schedule adherence, quality processes, manufacturing process capability, manpower, maintenance integration, product development initiatives. This position is primarily responsible for the value-adding proces and operates on a 10/4 rotation.

What will you do?

First-Line (day to day) Responsibilities:

  • Directly supervise 20 hourly, unionized employees
  • Efficient and effective operation of the production equipment and processes
  • Employee training and development on roles, responsibilities and accountability
  • Effective use of problem solving tools and methodologies to improve operational results
  • Execute projects from Value Stream teams
  • Countermeasure follow-up and completion of special causes
  • Coordinate activities around major shutdowns and holiday periods
  • Coordinate daily maintenance activities in the operation
  • Integrate maintenance work and production work around Downdays including prioritizing the work and scheduling production activities
  • Integrate operations with production planning; raw material flow, inventory, packaging, quality of material, GIP
  • Identify and plan for manpower requirements, overtime, maintenance required to complete standard and critical work
  • Coordinate new product development (NPD) activities in the operation
  • Provide for any necessary outside resources to drive results in operations

Improvement Responsibilities:

  • Develop, improve, document and deploy coordinating processes and associated performance metrics
  • Develop and improve internal plant communication processes between operations, maintenance, lab, logistics, and ABPT
  • Develop and improve manpower utilization processes
  • Drive improvements in operations through effective Downday planning and execution
  • Coordinate Maintenance activities and improvement projects
  • Manage the completion of RCFA's in the operation
  • Have working technical knowledge of the following manufacturing technologies:
    • Lean Manufacturing
    • DMAIC
    • Six Sigma
    • Kaizen

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, technical degree, or equivalent experience in first-line supervision with an emphasis on process improvement
  • 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment
  • 2+ years union leadership experience

  • Ability to use computer programs and processes (Minitab, Excel, Word, SAP, Access, Clarity, etc.)
  • Practical working knowledge of process improvement methods
  • Ability to act as a shift Relief Supervisor and Relief Team Manager

About the location (Pensacola FL)

Our Pensacola Plant, one of twenty Armstrong plants in North America, employs 200+ people working on rotating shifts, 24/7, in the manufacture and shipment of acoustical ceiling tile to Armstrong's customers worldwide. The Pensacola Plant was originally built in 1929 to produce insulating building material.

Pensacola is the westernmost city in the Florida Panhandle. Pensacola is a seaport on Pensacola Bay, which is protected by 52 miles of sugar white barrier islands on the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico. A large United States Naval Air Station, the first in the United States, is located southwest of the city and is the home of the Blue Angels flight demonstration team and the National Naval Aviation Museum.
