Job Summary:

The successful candidate for the role of statistician will play a critical role in advancing the Department of Emergency Medicine's growing research enterprise by providing expert statistical consulting and data analytics support. This role will collaborate closely with faculty investigators, research staff, and other members of study teams to ensure robust study design, accurate data interpretation, and high-quality research outputs.

The statistician will be responsible for designing and implementing statistical methodologies, conducting data analyses for clinical and translational research studies. In addition to supporting specific research projects, the statistician will act as a key resource for faculty and research staff, advising on dataset design and analysis plans. Some scientific writing will be required. The role may also involve mentoring trainees on statistical methodologies and fostering growth for learners in health professions and associated fields.

This is a highly collaborative role that requires strong analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to communicate complex statistical concepts effectively to a diverse audience, including clinicians, research staff, and trainees. The ideal candidate will have experience working with large clinical datasets, electronic health records (EHR), and advanced statistical techniques applicable to emergency medicine research.


Responsibilities:
Contributes to a research agenda set by a lead researcher by preparing data sets, analyzing them using data science techniques, and presenting the results. Plays a leadership role and may lead a team and/or personnel.

  • 20% Prepares data sets for analysis including cleaning/quality assurance, transformations, restructuring, and integration of multiple data sources
  • 30% Identifies and implements or guides others in implementing appropriate data science techniques to find data patterns and answer research questions chosen by the lead researcher including data visualization, statistical analysis, machine learning, and data mining
  • 20% Organizes and automates project steps for data preparation and analysis
  • 15% Composes and assembles reproducible workflows and reports to clearly articulate patterns to researchers and/or administrators
  • 10% Documents approaches to address research questions and contributes to the establishment of reproducible research methodologies and analysis workflows
  • 5% Serves as an institutional subject matter expert and liaison to key internal and external stakeholders regarding data science best practices and methodologies and represents the interests of data science

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

- At least 2 years' experience in a clinical research environment, working with interdisciplinary teams (including physicians and data scientists)
- Expertise using psychometric tools for test construction and validation
- Expertise using Tableau and other visualization tools to complete research projects
- Proficiency in statistical programming languages such as R, SAS, Python, or STATA

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience collaborating with content experts in early-stage study design to identify methodological approaches suited to project goals
- Familiarity with emergency medicine, prehospital medicine, and emergency care delivery data and variable structure
- Track record of supporting projects from conceptualization through dissemination, including conference presentations and peer reviewed publications
- Experience scaffolding projects as required to support and teach trainees


Work Type:

It is anticipated this position will be remote and requires work be performed at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Additional Information:

Due to the sporadic nature of the hours, this position will be paid hourly and will not have an assigned FTE. This role requires a flexible schedule, with hours that may vary depending on project needs. There may be occasions when tasks need to be completed during evenings or weekends to meet deadlines or business demands. We appreciate candidates who are adaptable and comfortable with this level of flexibility.

The department will not be able to support a request for a J-1 waiver. If you choose to pursue a waiver and apply for our position, neither the UW nor UWMF will reimburse you for your legal or waiver fees.

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship.
