LOCATION OF (1) POSITION(S) TO BE FILLED: DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE, AUDIT DIVISION, KNOX COUNTY

This position is designed to Work from Home (Remote) 80% of the time.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school and experience equivalent to four years of experience in one or a combination of the following: (1) tax auditing; (2) clerical or technical accounting or auditing, or (3) tax preparation.

Substitution of Experience for Education: Qualifying experience in tax auditing, clerical or technical accounting or auditing, and/or tax preparation may substitute for the required education on a year for year basis.

Substitution of Education for Experience: Accounting, bookkeeping, business, or computer course work from an accredited college or technical institute may substitute for years of experience up to four years. Three semester hours in accounting, bookkeeping, business, or computer course work is equivalent to a one-year substitution; six semester hours in accounting, bookkeeping, business, or computer course work is equivalent to a two-year substitution; nine semester hours in accounting, bookkeeping, business, or computer course work is equivalent to a three-year substitution; twelve semester hours in accounting, bookkeeping, business, or computer course work is equivalent to a four-year substitution.

OR

Experience equivalent to two years as an Accounting Technician with the State of Tennessee.

Applicants for this class must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operators license. Following the appointment, they must reside outside the State of Tennessee.

Examination Method: Education and Experience, 100%, for Preferred Service positions. For Executive Service positions, Minimum Qualifications, Necessary Special Qualifications, and Examination Method are determined by the appointing authority.

Overview

Under general supervision, is responsible for learning to perform paraprofessional tax auditing assistance work of moderate difficulty. An employee in this class learns to provide assistance and information to tax auditors or agents in the examination of business records to ensure compliance with accounting and auditing principles and with state tax laws, rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

  1. Provides taxpayer assistance in person, by telephone, or through correspondence concerning basic tax information, tax assessments and payment options.
  2. Assists tax auditors or agents in auditing, analyzing, or investigating the financial records of businesses and individuals.
  3. Utilizes various resources and tools to research and compile taxpayer history for tax audits or investigations.
  4. Compiles and maintains taxpayer data. May archive audit information and receive and process tax payments.
  5. Conducts research and may assist in the computation of certain tax assessments, confirm accuracy of audit work papers, reports, and supporting schedules.
  6. Prepares and maintains a variety of records and statistical reports concerning completed audits and other tax audit information. May distribute information provided by management to appropriate personnel.
  7. May count stock of cigarettes, alcohol, and other items at taxpayer's business location.
  8. May orders office supplies and maintains equipment inventory.
  9. May travel to various locations throughout the state.

TN Driver Standards

State of Tennessee positions that may involve driving responsibilities require candidates to meet the following minimum driver qualifications:

  • A valid driver's license
  • For the past five years, the candidate's driver record must not have record of the following violations: driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, more than 4 moving violations.
