About the Job

The Office of International Programs and Services (IPS) is a key driver of global engagement at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). With a mission statement that prioritizes developing students to be globally engaged citizens, global engagement is an integral aspect of UMD. The Director of International Affairs will provide strategic vision and leadership to help us achieve our mission by supporting students, faculty, and staff as they participate in academic mobility, learn from diverse experiences, and contribute to campus internationalization.

Position Description:

A member of the academic leadership team, the Director of International Affairs provides strategic leadership to support global engagement and campus internationalization as part of UMD's mission. Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (EVCAA) and partnering with academic deans, senior administrators, faculty, and staff, the Director will lead campus efforts related to internationalization to strengthen and enrich our campus community. The Director of International Affairs leads IPS and partners to advance the following areas:

  • International Partnerships
  • Study Abroad
  • International Student Recruitment
  • International Student Success
  • Global Education at UMD
  • Faculty and Staff International Engagement
  • Passport Acceptance Facility

The Director collaborates with the Office of Strategic Enrollment Management, the Multicultural Center, the University of Minnesota System's Global Programs and Strategy Alliance (GPS Alliance), and many other units at UMD. In FY25, a campuswide committee conducted a thorough analysis of institutional efforts and opportunities and provided a robust set of recommendations to assist UMD in significantly strengthening internationalization. We are looking for a leader to help us enact that vision.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership (40%)

  • Provide leadership, strategic planning, coordination, and advocacy for university global engagement at UMD.
  • Manage the IPS office, including programs, processes and procedures, and budget.
  • Provide leadership and management in outreach and partnership development, creating and maintaining interinstitutional relationships with higher education institutions throughout the world.
  • Identify fundraising and grant opportunities to support scholarships and other international programming efforts/needs.
  • Advocate internally and externally for resources to support and enhance global engagement.

Internal and External Collaborations (30%)

  • Develop and maintain relationships with UMD departments, including collegiate units, enrollment management and international admissions, diversity and inclusion efforts, the graduate school, student financial services, and other relevant offices to advocate and support student needs.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external organizations involved in international academic mobility (e.g. Fulbright, NAFSA, United States Department of State, IIE, etc.).
  • Ensure coordination and communication between IPS and the UM System Global Programs and Strategy Alliance office.
  • Collaborate with senior administrators to support international education initiatives.
  • Collaborate to provide immigration information to campus departments to ensure university compliance with federal immigration regulations.
  • Develop and coordinate articulation agreements with international colleges, universities, and organizations.
  • Collaborate with colleges and enrollment management on recruitment initiatives.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to welcome and support international students.

Operations (30%)

  • Develop and implement policies and practices for risk management, travel safety, communications, and other travel-related matters, and respond to emergency situations.
  • Ensure compliance with risk management, assessment, academic, and other university policies and procedures.
  • Provide status updates and other reports on international education to the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, senior administrators, university committees, and departments.
  • Provide leadership and expertise in creating high quality and meaningful faculty-and-staff led study abroad programs.
  • Convene the Faculty Advisory Committee for Study Abroad.
  • Participate and actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives and strategies and apply knowledge to everyday work.
  • Actively engage in creating an inclusive, welcoming, and professional work environment for staff, students, and visitors.

The Director of International Affairs will be a key partner in rebuilding UMD's international initiatives. Working with their team, they will draw on recommendations from a recent task force on internationalization to consolidate, coordinate, and strengthen internationalization efforts in order to:

  • Increase international student enrollment
  • Expand study abroad opportunities
  • Strengthen cross-cultural programs on campus
  • Foster global partnerships
  • Enhance support services for international students
  • Promote global learning in curriculum
  • Support faculty engagement in campus internationalization

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Requires BA/BS with at least 10 years of experience
  • Progressively responsible, relevant experience in international education, and/or in higher education administration.
  • Knowledge of current issues and best practices related to a comprehensive international education office.
  • Effective interpersonal, organizational, analytical, writing, and speaking abilities with a collaborative orientation to decision-making.
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate, and provide leadership within a diverse campus community.
  • Supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in a field relevant to international education such as: international education administration, intercultural communication, international relations, student services personnel, higher education administration, or other relevant areas.
  • Knowledge of immigration regulations pertaining to non-immigrant F-1/J-1 visa holders.
  • Knowledge of higher education systems outside the United States.
  • Practical knowledge of SEVIS and other applicable federal government regulations pertaining to non-immigrant F-1/J-1 visa holders.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget management and forecasting.
  • Demonstrated experience working with external organizations involved in international academic mobility.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and individuals from different cultural backgrounds in various countries.
  • Experience advising international students and/or students on study abroad programs.
  • Experience working with faculty on developing faculty-led study abroad programs and curriculum integration.
  • Overseas living, extended stay, or work experience.
  • Competency in a language other than English.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $101,325-$120,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
