Job Summary

The EMG Technician/Technologist will assist and help perform routine EMG procedures on hospital inpatients and outpatients of various ages. EMG studies may be performed in the laboratory or the hospital as inpatients. The EMG Technician/Technologist must demonstrate the ability to learn to perform the full range of studies conducted in the EMG Lab. The Neurologist and/or designee monitors and guides the EMG technologist. Assignments for daily tasks and overview of the technical quality of studies are done by the Neurologist and/or Nurse Practice Manager. Willingness to be flexible with their schedule to support patient care needs, and attend mandatory/staff meetings.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload a license and/or certification if required for the position

  • American Heart Association (AHA) CPR certification or UCDH-issued CPR Certification
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a medical/health care setting
  • Skills and ability to accurately apply equipment to the predetermined areas
  • Must have the knowledge of electrode placement to accurately monitor physiological artifacts and apply additional electrodes
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skill levels in area of expertise to ensure the provision of the highest quality patient care services
  • Must have the ability to apply basic principles and practices of neurodiagnostic technology to novel techniques and develop expertise in performing complex neurodiagnostic procedures
  • Interpersonal communication skills to interact with tact and diplomacy with hospital and clinic patients, physicians, and staff at all levels
  • Ability to engage in collaborative problem-solving with coworkers and staff
  • Must have the ability to function as a "team player," being considerate and flexible, taking the needs of your peers into consideration
  • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained and a professional, respectful hospital, clinic, or laboratory environment exists at all times
  • Ability to maintain composure, efficiency, and a positive, customer-service-oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with patients who are ill, angry, or emotionally distressed
  • Remains flexible and adaptable to changes in policies and procedures
  • Accomplish a variety of concurrent assignments in an effective and efficient manner
  • Organizes and prioritizes assignments to complete work in a timely and efficient manner, particularly when there are changes in workload or assignments

  • Working knowledge or ability to learn departmental and system policies and procedures
  • Ability to efficiently use a computer system to retrieve pertinent patient information through the Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
  • Knowledge and ability to use computer systems and maintain a clinical database
  • Filing skills to maintain logs and files of information in alphabetical, chronological, and/or numerical order, such that it is current and easily retrievable

Preferred Qualifications

  • R. NCS.T. credential from AAET
  • NDT CAAHEP graduate OR another Accredited NDT Program OR comparable coursework
  • 1 year of experience working in an EMG/NCS patient care setting
  • Direct patient care experience

The Clinical Neurodiagnostic Services Laboratories at UCDMC consist of several units: EEG, Sleep, TCD, and EMG. Each unit is managed jointly by the Medical Director and the Neurodiagnostic Services Director.

Work Environment
