Program Overview:

Iowa's six-week SHPEP is designed to help aspiring pre-health professions undergraduate students reach their academic goals through intensive preparatory science courses, as well as enriching clinical and community-based learning experiences.

Job Description:

Instructors will be responsible for teaching an intensive mini-science course in Organic Chemistry. The instructor will work with the Iowa SHPEP Program Director to design and implement an appropriate course syllabus, evaluation plan, and lesson plans that allow the students to understand the fundamental concepts of the assigned subject area and be able to apply these concepts when presented with a "real world" health problem.

Each position will require a commitment to teaching, tutoring, class preparation, community engagement, and evaluation.

Current scheduling places the classroom teaching at 2-hour morning sessions daily for approximately 5 weeks running from June 16th to July 17th, 2025.

Stipend: $5,500

Instructors are encouraged to attend, as their time permits, the program's welcome and closing receptions and other networking and social events held for and by the students throughout the six-week program.

Qualifications and Requirements:

* Bachelor's degree in course listed above or a related field (Master's or higher preferred).

* Previous teaching experience in courses listed above or a relevant science discipline.

* Strong organizational and communication skills.

* Ability to design and implement effective lesson plans that align with program objectives.

* Communicate effectively with program director and coordinator regarding student progress in course.

* Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups to foster a welcoming and respectful learning environment.

Desired candidates: SHPEP/SMDEP (or other STEM program) graduates, previous college-level teaching experience in the sciences, experience working with undergraduate students who come from a disadvantaged economic and/or educational background.
