Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our leadership team as a Senior Unit Manager! About the role Responsible for one or more units or function within the claim's organization. Leading, supervising and developing employees to meet performance objectives for one or more units or functions, including time standards, quality & production goals. Manages work within the Claims areas, which include the handling of various types of claims: Death claims for Deferred and Immediate Annuities in the Retirement division. Works with department Director/or AVP to develop strategies to improve departmental structure and procedures based on team performance, state and regulatory requirements, market requirements, and growth initiatives. What you'll do in this role
- Manage team of Claims professionals to include Claims Examiners, Claims Specialists, and Claims Leads. Oversee quality controls, workflows and processes to ensure timely and accurate payment of claims and other processes to meet both regulatory requirements and customer expectations.
- Overseeing training and development of employees directly and indirectly managed and making effective staffing decisions. Ensure appropriate transparency into organizational performance levels through control monitoring, management reporting, etc.
- Deliver effective and efficient day-to-day execution across all functions.
- Maintain a strong line of communication with the Legal and Compliance area to ensure that all state and federal regulations are met and that Symetra's claim practices are consistent with current regulations.
- Providing coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve employee, business and customer results. Challenging and inspiring employees to achieve business results and motivating them through leadership and by celebrating successes.
- Actively seek and implement process improvements that will increase overall efficiency and quality of work.
- Develop and prioritize annual goals providing framework for goal setting for all positions within the department.
- Provide periodic reports to upper management, including statistical group performance measures.
- Provide training, coaching, and development opportunities as appropriate
- Responsible for representing the department on high profile special projects or initiatives and collaborating with internal teams.
- Represent Director/AVP in their absence.
- Resolving escalated issues involving employees, customers and/or vendors. Anticipating potential issues; analyzing, developing and implementing appropriate solutions.
- Defining long-term goals and objectives for their work group in conjunction with the Director/AVP.
- Identifying trends and making recommendations to Director/AVP that lead to continuous improvement in quality, productivity and customer experience, while driving unit cost down. Responsible for keeping staffing models current and adhering to budget
- Developing a high-level understanding of internal operations and how related teams interact to achieve results.
- Driving operational improvements, improving customer service, sharing best practices.
- Develop and maintain a positive relationship with internal and external customers, including other business units, to ensure success of the related business areas.
- Oversee the review and settlement of certain sensitive and complex claims by collaborating with Director/AVP, Law, Compliance, or Underwriting in the. At times may be called upon as a witness in ligation matters.
- Create a team environment of employee engagement designed to maximize empowerment, accountability and outstanding customer service
- Act as claims department liaison for internal and external audits (i.e. state compliance audits, E&Y audits, etc.).
- Identify potential impacts to department procedures and workflow. Prioritize department projects and assign appropriate individuals to complete them.
- Update, maintain and communicate documented workflow updates for business teams, to include Internal Audit Services, SOX, etc.
- Conduct formal presentations on behalf of business unit for employees and/or internal/external partners. Lead trainings and teach classes when needed.
- Be available for travel and presentation opportunities as they arise. Fill in for Director as needed. Other duties as needed.

Compensation Salary Range: $70,600- $117,600 plus eligibility for annual bonus program Who you are
- Demonstrated strong ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external customers.
- Must be able to confidently communicate across multiple levels of leadership.
- General understanding of larger organization and a high level understanding of related operational unit impact.
- Proven ability to manage multiple small to large impact projects in a cross-functional setting.
- Proven ability to lead and manage change (process and/or technology) across the operational unit. Ability to read, understand and apply contract language, state, and federal regulations. Some medical terminology is helpful.
- Proven experience with workflow processes and demonstrated understanding of the importance of adherence to procedures and service level commitments. Able to direct change as needed in area of process improvement.
- Ability to develop an effective team by establishing a common cause and fostering a climate of innovation and collaboration.
- Demonstrated ability to set and communicate group goals that convey desired direction and course for staff. Proven record that goals are regularly achieved.
- Proven ability to achieve goals through direction and delegation to Unit Managers.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects to successful completion; set priorities, delegate, follow-up, and coach as needed. Manage own priorities to facilitate progress.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills. Proven ability to successfully propose and sell ideas.
- Advanced conflict and resolution skills as demonstrated through successful resolution of customer concerns and complaints.
- Proven ability to set motivational atmosphere for staff.
- High School diploma or equivalent experience required
