Assistant Technical Director

This position is an on-campus, full-time, 12-month appointment based in Champaign, Illinois covered by the Professional Support Staff (PSS) Union with an annual salary of $50,960.44.

The Assistant Technical Director is responsible for assisting the Theatre Director in managing the shop and coordinating and implementing the design and technical operation of all productions, rentals, and special events held within the theatre facilities according to safety codes, budget constraints, and department policy.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervise and/or lead part-time staff and students, setting schedules, coordinating work, and identifying lines of communication.
  • Coordinate with the Theatre Director, FAA Department Chair, theatre faculty, department and division staff, students and volunteers to ensure smooth operation of the theatre facilities as an academic lab and community venue.
  • Assist with Parkland theatre productions and theatre rentals.
  • Consult with Theatre Director to determine goals, objectives, budgets, production schedule, and design expectation.
  • Assist Theatre Director in planning upcoming seasons including providing budget estimates and scheduling recommendations.
  • Use independent judgment to evaluate the equipment and technology needs for the theatre.
  • Assist Theatre Director in managing scenic budgets, constructions, installation, and dismantling of all scenic elements. Recommend budget items, and coordinate with Theatre Director and Department Chair in order to purchase supplies and other materials needed for productions or facilities.
  • Report and assist with needed maintenance, repairs and improvements to ensure that the theatres are maintained in an orderly, clean, sanitary, and safe condition. Perform annual equipment maintenance as needed.
  • Assist the Theatre Director in assigning production duties and responsibilities for all part time staff members.
  • Coordinate with theatre faculty to monitor the work of students to ensure maximum educational opportunities.
  • Help maintain inventory of properties owned by the theatre facility.
  • Assist guest directors and designers with budgets and purchases.
  • Attend Parkland Theatre production meetings as needed as well as technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, crew view and strike.
  • Build scenery and build or repair materials for the Fine and Applied Arts department as needed.
  • Study specifications in blue prints, sketches or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and material.
  • Install and maintain scenery during and after load in.
  • Adhere to safety codes, budget constraints, and department policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Theatre (Technical or Design)
  • Two years of experience as theatrical technician
  • Shop management experience
  • Experience leading crews or working with students in an academic theatre environment
  • Experience in wood and steel construction, health and safety, and stage automation in the context of a performing arts theatre, as well as the ability to operate a single purchase fly system.
  • Experience with theatre equipment including lighting, sound, rigging, and construction/fabrication equipment
  • Verbal and mathematical abilities sufficient for execution of technical responsibilities required by the position
  • Knowledge of CNC Shopbot
  • Ability to operate a personnel lift, climb ladders, and carry equipment weighting up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
