About This Role

K-State Research and Extension is seeking applications for an Extension Assistant/Associate Professor (Extension Consumer Safety Specialist). The position is a two-state (Kansas State University and the University of Missouri) joint appointment. Kansas State University and the University of Missouri are land grant universities with a three-part mission of education, research, and extension. The position will be based at Kansas State University-Olathe campus, a graduate campus focused on animal health and food safety and security in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area.

Duties/Responsibilities:



  • Develop an extension program emphasizing consumer issues in food safety. The program should include, but is not restricted to, the areas of risk communication, food safety, processing technologies, management, and preservation as it relates to consumers.
  • Serve as state specialist for training field staff throughout Kansas and Missouri and is expected to provide leadership in designing researched-based educational programs, materials, and curricula for food processing, preservation and food safety.

Worksite Option

This position is eligible for a hybrid worksite. Work is performed partially remote and partially on employer premises or designated assignment location. This role is expected to work on-site approximately two (2-3) days a week.

An employee who is working remotely must reside within the United States in order to comply with all federal and state laws, filings, or tax requirements. What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:



  • PhD or equivalent terminal degree required in Food Safety, Food Science, Public Health or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (oral, written) with distance education technology skills essential.
  • Must be able to work harmoniously, independently and collaboratively with people.
  • Demonstrated competence in building relationships and working effectively with individuals, groups, colleagues, and the ability to develop and lead partnerships and collaborations.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering food safety and preservation education.
  • Knowledge of the Extension and the program development process including program outcome evaluation.
  • Experience with seeking external funding to support program efforts.
  • Ability to utilize mass media and digital/web-based delivery methods for education programs.
  • Experience working cooperatively with university faculty to develop strong multi-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Experience developing relationships with state agencies, institutions of higher education, professional organizations, etc.


Other Requirements:



  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to meet Extension needs.
