Lab Tech 2, The Beirne B. Carter Immunology Research Center

The Beirne B. Carter Immunology Research Center at the University of Virginia is seeking a highly motivated Laboratory Technician 2. This position provides technical support to a basic science research laboratory that will consist of undergraduate students, research scientists, and technical staff. Students getting ready to graduate with a science related degree, this coming May are strongly encouraged to apply.

Core Duties:

• Confer with PI and other investigators and staff regularly to determine project goals.

• Assist with planning and execution of experiments to obtain data for stated project goals, including communication and coordination with the Clinical Research Coordinator for patient sample delivery and processing, 1. Processing of human samples will require careful sterile lab techniques, and compliance with University, Federal, and State policies and procedures. 2. Part of the sample processing includes production and delivery of sample collection kits, which includes transport of samples from hospital labs and/or operating rooms.

• Develop and maintain accurate inventories of patient samples, along with comprehensive and accurate database of patient flow cytometry results .

• Maintain inventory of antibodies and lab supplies and order supplies as needed.

• Prepare buffers and solutions as needed for experiments.

• Provide routine maintenance on lab equipment and lab.

• Analyze experimental results using various software and generate plots, tables and graphs of data.

• Employ state-of-the art Flow Cytometry techniques to test and verify optimal staining procedures for human hematopeoetic cells. Assist in the analysis and interpretation of results with PI and other investigators.

• Ensure all sample handling and data acquisition are done in accordance with institutional IRB, HIPPA and Biosafety regulations.

• In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

The selected candidates will be expected to communicate respectfully and clearly with laboratory members and help seek possible solutions to laboratory challenges at hand. Applicants should also have a strong background in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

Preference will be given to those with experience in Flow Cytometry Optimization but training in all core duties will be provided to the selected applicants.

To be considered, all applicants should have prior laboratory experience and champion a high level of integrity and attention to detail in documentation and all lab work.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Associate's degree

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Physical Demands

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
