PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

Nature and Scope
|
The PGY2 pharmacy residency is designed to meet and adhere to the standards and practice principles set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The PGY2 residency program is designed to develop accountability; practice patterns; habits; and expert knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities in the respective advanced area of pharmacy practice. The PGY2 residency builds upon the broad-based competencies achieved in a PGY1 residency, deepening the resident's ability to provide care in the most complex of cases or in the support of care through practice leadership. Therefore, the PGY2 residency provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and transforming both into improved medication therapy for patients. A resident who completes successfully the PGY2 residency should possess competencies that enable attainment of board certification in the practice area, where board certification for the practice area exists. The residency is conducted over a 52-week period, generally July through June. During this time the resident will complete various learning experiences that are either required or desired by the resident. A timeline of the learning experiences and resident project is developed during the first month of the residency and are based upon both resident and director desires, goals, and areas of interest. This timeline is a guide for the resident and director. Adjustments and changes can be made throughout the year. The resident is also expected to staff a minimum of four shifts per month performing the duties in the areas where competency has been achieved or demonstrate an equivalent benefit to the pharmacy department as agreed upon by the pharmacy clinical manager and corresponding residency director. The resident will be assessed and evaluated regularly in order to provide valuable feedback and to ensure that the goals and objectives of the program are being met. This position does provide patient care.
