Definition

THE POSITION

Golden West College is seeking a full-time, equity-minded, tenure-track faculty member in Cosmetology, commencing with the Fal 2025 semester. The primary teaching assignment involves all areas of Cosmetology. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development; participation in department, division, and college committees; participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines; the leveraging of student support resources; participation in ongoing professional development; and maintaining and performing required State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology accreditation to the program.

The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off-campus and is subject to change as needed. Located in the coastal community of Huntington Beach, also known as "Surf City," Golden West College is regarded as one of the most beautiful campuses in Southern California. THE DEPARTMENT

The Cosmetology Department currently includes programs in Cosmetology and Esthetics. The programs are designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary to prepare for the state licensure examination and successful initial employment with hands-on training, industry-standard equipment, and expert instructors guiding students to achieve excellence in both fields.

Faculty have the opportunity to enhance their classroom methods during two professional development days during the academic year, which include learning sessions that support student success.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide instruction in cosmetology and/or esthetics, in accordance with established curriculum, course outlines, and State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology regulations.
  • Provide leadership in the development and revision of (cosmetology) curriculum responsive to the students served.
  • Maintain Expertise and Currency. Stay up-to-date with developments in the assigned discipline(s) to ensure the provision of current and relevant instruction.
  • Effective Communication. Demonstrate proficiency in both verbal and written communication with students, colleagues, and staff, fostering a collaborative and respectful environment.
  • Instructional Excellence. Employ effective teaching methods and utilize appropriate materials that align with the course, discipline, modality, and the diverse needs of students.
  • Course and Learning Outcomes. Ensure adherence to course outline requirements and focus on achieving student learning outcomes.
  • Maintain regular office hours to provide students with the necessary support and guidance. Be responsive to individual student needs and promote an inclusive learning environment.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and organized student records in compliance with institutional policies.
  • Compliance with College Policies. Adhere to college and departmental policies, as well as relevant provisions of the applicable bargaining agreement.
  • Treat students with respect, demonstrating patience, fairness, and promptness in evaluating and discussing student work. Be responsive to the unique needs of individual students and embrace diversity in all aspects of teaching and learning.
  • Support for Diversity. Actively support the diversity of students, colleagues, and staff through inclusive language, teaching methods, and actions. Foster a welcoming environment where all individuals are valued.
  • Demonstrate respect for colleagues and the teaching profession characterized by the following conduct:

  • Curriculum Leadership and Development. Provide leadership in the development, revision, and ongoing evaluation of the Cosmetology curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of the student population. Engage in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation processes. Contribute to the design and execution of programs aimed at measuring and enhancing student performance.
  • Maintain high standards of professional conduct and ethics in all aspects of the role, both within the institution and in the broader community.
  • Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; adhering to departmental course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned.


Qualifications and Physical Demands

Minimum Qualifications

Any Bachelor's degree or higher AND two years of professional experience OR any associate degree AND six years of professional experience. Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.

Candidates who do not meet the minimum requirements as stated in the job posting, but feel they have a combination of education and experience that would be equivalent to the State Minimum Qualifications, must attach a completed Application for Equivalency Form. Additional Required Qualifications

Possession of a valid California State License in Cosmetology, and/ or Esthetics or Barbering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience teaching at the community college level, with a strong understanding of the diverse needs of students and the unique role of community colleges in fostering accessible, high-quality education.
  • Possess an understanding and commitment to the role and purpose of community college.
  • Experience teaching both laboratory and theory components in cosmetology and/or esthetics. Preference for candidates with at least two years of practical, hands-on experience in a treatment room or salon setting.
  • Professional experience and expertise in the field, particularly in areas such as advanced makeup, lashes, and hair removal, ensuring alignment with state board requirements.
  • Educational and/or instructional preparation in skin care from accredited institutions, such as the International Dermal Institute, with a commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a variety of effective teaching techniques and assessment methods to adapt teaching pedagogy to the knowledge level (developmental through transfer) and learning style of each individual and class.
  • Demonstrate willingness to critically evaluate and adjust instructional, relational, and classroom practices examine and re-mediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
  • Experience and skill in addressing issues of equity in the classroom, ensuring that all students have an equal opportunity to succeed.
  • Expertise in culturally responsive teaching, particularly in making cosmetology relevant to students' individual lives, interests, and communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within the Cosmetology, Esthetics, Barbering courses and classrooms.
  • Evidence of the ability to reflect on and respond to student learning assessments, using this feedback to improve teaching effectiveness and student outcomes.
  • A desire to actively engage in departmental, divisional, and college-wide committees, contributing to the shared governance and growth of the Coast Community College District.
  • Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
  • A demonstrated willingness and ability to assume leadership roles both within the department and across the institution.
  • Experience with Canvas and other online teaching platforms and training in online teaching best practices.
  • Ability to work with computers, and use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students in on-campus and online courses (where academically appropriate).
  • Exceptional ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, fostering a supportive and professional relationship with students, colleagues, and staff.
  • Experience teaching professionals in advanced educational settings, with expertise in developing and delivering curriculum for adult learners in a classroom environment.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

During the campus visit, each candidate will be interviewed and may be asked to conduct a short teaching demonstration/presentation on a previously announced topic as well as participate in a writing exercise and/or hands-on practical. The search committee will rate the candidate's responses to the interview questions, the demonstration/presentation, and the applicable writing exercises and/or hands-on practical. Based on this rating, a number of candidates will be recommended to move forward and will be invited to the campus for a second level interview.

The campus President will make the final recommendation for employment to the Board of Trustees. The successful candidate will be offered the position and placed on the current salary schedule based on their education and experience.

The start date will be determined by the hiring manager depending on the needs of the campus and the conditions of employment as posted in the job announcement/recruitment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

For a full-time, two-semester position a maximum starting range of $80,275 - $136,858 is offered, based on the salary schedule of Q2. In addition, an annual stipend of $3,902 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.

Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment. The Cosmetology program and faculty are on a 18 week, 210 day calendar.

The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in Coast Community College District policies, procedures, and Title IX. (Reference: BP/AP 5910)

The SELECTED CANDIDATE is required to complete the following before employment:

  • Provide a Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam for initial appointment (Note: The certificate must be renewed every 4 years as a condition of continuing employment).
