Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Center for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Education is within the College of Education and reports directly to the Dean.
The mission and vision of the Center will strengthen the STEM education enterprise by:
1. Improving the quality and quantity of P-12 teachers of science and mathematics;
2. Providing strong experiences in science and mathematics for all P-20 students while increasing the number of graduates pursuing careers in STEM disciplines;
3. Creating a supportive environment for multidisciplinary research, evaluation, and assessment while bridging the gap between educators and STEM professionals; and
4. Encouraging community engagement that leads to increased university partnerships with school districts, business and industry, and the community.
Job Duties
INTERNAL POSTING: Open only to applicants currently employed by East Carolina University.

The Director of the Center for STEM Education is a full-time, 12-month position with no more than 49% reassigned time for the selected faculty member to fulfill the administrative duties as the Director of the STEM Center. On average, the director will be expected to teach, or account for through funding, at least three courses per year.

Additional responsibilities of this position include:

Overseeing the Center programs and other activities in which the Center participates. Specific duties and responsibilities fall under four broad areas: 1) Program Design and Coordination including existing programs such as Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics and the Advanced Placement Institute, the Regional ECU Science Olympiad Tournament, as well as new programs that emerge; 2) Program Evaluation; 3) Public Outreach and Partnership Development and 4) Supervision of staff, temporary and student employees.

The Director provides leadership in the development of implementation of a vision for the Center; manages an active program of research and external funding for the Center; develops innovative programs with post-secondary institutions, schools, and businesses to improve mathematics, science, engineering, and technology education; serves as an organizing point for large scale projects to improve STEM education across educational systems; collaborates with Departmental and University units to advance the research mission of the College of Education and the University; broadens engagement of students and educators in STEM to provide communities with a skilled and STEM literate workforce; influences local, state, and national policies related to P-20 STEM education; facilitates quality STEM opportunities for students and teachers through ongoing workshops, camps, institutes, and outreach events; connects a network of like-minded individuals and partners to create opportunities to develop solutions for the issues related to STEM education; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work a flexible schedule as duties require.

The Director is responsible for maintaining and overseeing the Center's budget and maintains the STEM center as a financial self-supporting unit; Additionally, the Director will be responsible as the direct report for personnel within the Center. The Director will produce annual and time-sensitive reports. The Director will be tasked with writing grant proposals, executing funded programs, and conducting program evaluations. The Director will assist faculty in identifying opportunities for external funding; collaborate and provide support for STEM education projects, grants, and research. In addition, the Director will respond to requests to participate in other existing programs to build partnerships within and external to the College. Finally, the Director will participate in needs assessment analysis and design and offer new programs responsive to the identified needs of the area.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Doctoral degree in education with an emphasis in one of the STEM-related disciplines, a STEM discipline, or a related field. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions and conferred by the time of application.
  • Tenured Associate Professor or Professor
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and/or leadership in P-20 schools in one of the STEM disciplines
  • Demonstrated experience forming relationships/partnerships within and outside of the College of Education and university

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education


  • STEM related research
  • Program evaluation experience
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Record of securing grant funding in support of research and creative activities
