Position Summary

Are you seeking a high energy, residential summer position?

The UNM (University of New Mexico) Health Sciences Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (OfDEI) is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Dorm Advisor position supporting its Communities to Careers summer programs. Dorm Advisors will serve as on-site liaisons for student participants, teachers, administrators, throughout summer programming. Dorm Advisors will be expected to live in the dorms during the Communities to Careers summer program. Housing through UNM student housing will be provided for all Dorm Advisors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the afternoon and overnight supervision of up to 20 student participants. Students range from high school seniors - incoming college first-year students.

  • Assist with the organization and implementation of the student activities to enhance leadership skills and team building among the participating students

  • Ensure compliance and enforce Communities to Careers program policies and procedures.

  • Assist the Program Specialist with organization and implementation of evening and/or weekend activities.

  • Provide a positive environment for the students by establishing a strong rapport with them. Encourage, motivate, and help build their self-confidence and readiness to begin college.

  • Will assist OfDEI program staff in the fulfillment of the organization's objectives and goals.

  • Chaperone student participants on daily basis, on field trips, and off-site activities

  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Minimal limited exposure to physical risk.

  • Minimal limited physical effort required.

  • Walking from UNM Main to UNM HSC (Health Sciences Center) campus daily is required.

  • Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment with occasional outdoor environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to work 28+ hours per week during the months of June and July, Sunday-Saturday

  • Ability and willingness to live in an assigned private UNM dorm during the month of June 2025 (June 1-20, 2025) - Dorm room will be paid for by HSC OfDEI

  • Ability to attend summer program staff orientation on Wednesday and Thursday, May 28-29, 2025 (Subject to Change)

  • Sophomore/2nd year standing or above as of Fall 2025.

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5

  • 1-year experience working directly with young people and related to the responsibilities specified.

  • Must pass a background check.

  1. Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality with young adults or near-peers.

  1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  1. Detail oriented, logical, and methodological approach to problem solving.

  1. Reliable and responsible while having the flexibility to adapt to fast paced work environment.

  1. Ability to cooperate successfully as a member of a team.

  1. Pursing a degree in a health career field
