Click here to learn more about our benefits! Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service. Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metra's fixed assets, such as buildings, stations, bridges, track, electrical, telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects, and Communications and Maintenance. Reporting directly to the Chief Engineering Officer, the Sr Roadway Engineer is the lead engineer and subject matter expert responsible for ensuring that all track designs, purchases, leases, easements, and requests for construction on railroad right-of-way conform to applicable railroad and Metra standards and guidelines. The primary duties include conducting field surveys to determine maintenance and repair work needed on tracks; designing or assessing designs drafted by consultants for appropriateness, feasibility, and compliance with engineering principles, Metra, and federal quality and safety standards; and makes changes as needed. Serves as subject-matter-expert advising departments, consultants, contractors, and public officials on railroad engineering, construction, and maintenance practices. Functions as the documentation librarian creating, updating, and maintaining engineering documents; and providing official documents, right-of-way surveys, track charts, and maps to various Metra departments. Develops standard operating procedures for track design and layout, yard facilities, routes, and connections. Functions as liaison to foreign railroads issues involving design, repair, and maintenance of tracks, crossings, bridges, retaining walls, drainage, etc. within Metra's on right-of-way; recommend solutions; and oversee compliance. Works under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline OR in lieu of the specified degree, any combination of education and experience may be substituted for the required degree that equals four years conducting field surveys and performing applicable engineering calculations, designing or assessing designs drafted by consultants for appropriateness, and/or feasibility, reading detailed engineering drawings and interpreting engineering specifications. 2.
