Job Summary

The anticipated duration of this temporary assignment is approximately 8 months

In the Staff Research Associate position you would be a key team member of the Mordes lab at the UCSF Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND). The Mordes lab integrates novel human stem cell-based models with neuropathology to understand disease mechanisms for dementia, ALS, Parkinson's disease and related neurodegenerative diseases to guide the development of new treatment strategies. We routinely differentiate pluripotent stem cells to excitatory neurons and spinal motor neurons to examine cellular pathways that have been implicated in disease by unbiased human genetic studies. Our group in part of the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases and the Weill Institute for Neuroscience at UCSF and we collaborate with several groups at UCSF and in biotech for multi-omic approaches. We are a young vibrant group of investigators and support the scientific pursuits and career development of each other.

In this position, you will be working as a member of a research team that examines how neurons maintain protein and RNA homeostasis and investigate disease mechanisms that are associated with both familial and sporadic forms of age-related neurodegeneration. For our lab environment, we seek lab members with strong communication skills and organizational that are passionate to advance our knowledge of the brain with the goal of finding new ways to treat progressive neurological diseases. The projects will be guided by the principal investigator and post-doctoral fellows. Routine lab experiments and operations are expected to be independent. Depending on experience and interests, there may be an opportunity for "dry lab" computational based biological studies as well. Prior lab members have contributed to publications and pursue medical school or graduate school program.

Responsibilities include tissue culture-based experiments with stem cells, neurons, and glia as well as molecular biology methods including protein-based assays, molecular cloning, qPCR, imaging, preparation of nucleic acid libraries, cell imaging imaging, and standard statistical analysis. Additional duties may include preparing shared lab reagents, occasionally ordering lab supplies based on kab inventory, and other lab duties as assigned. There may be a minor component, no more than 25% of effort, of animal husbandry and working with murine models and examining brain and spinal cords.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Tissue culture and directed differentiation of human stem cells, collection of cells and neurons and downstream analysis including immunoblots, immunostaining, and qPCR
  • Additional molecular biology and biochemical methods
  • Routine lab preparations and maintainenace of lab supplies, solutions, and standard equipment
  • Animal husbandry and working with murine models of disease in the vivarium

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
