The Salvation Army SIAC Marion Store located in Marion, IL, is looking for a Thrift Store Manager. This position assists the Corps Officers / Unit Leadership in the daily operation of the thrift store. The store manager will assume managerial duties to include opening and closing store, managing bank deposits, oversee planning and scheduling of daily work activities of employees and volunteers. The store manager is also expected to perform all functions of a thrift store worker.

This is a full-time position 40 hours per week, with the starting pay of $16.50 per hour.

Essential Functions



  1. Forecast sales and develop business strategy.
  2. Promote store sales.
  3. Solicit donations from major stores.
  4. Maintain good customer relations as is expected by all staff and volunteers.
  5. Assist Corps Officer / Unit Leader with budget preparation.
  6. Serve on Thrift Store / Advisory Committee.
  7. Attend meetings as required and keep personnel informed of policies and directives.
  8. Evaluate individual employee's contributions and areas needing improvement through formal employee evaluation process.
  9. Adhere to professional standards of practice. Appropriately represent The Salvation Army in the community and be responsible to and be supervised by the Corps Officer.
  10. Recruit, train and supervise store staff and volunteers; Make recommendations to Corps Officer / Unit Leader regarding hiring and termination.
  11. Ensure compliance with policies and procedures, including recommending disciplinary actions to CO/Unit Leader.
  12. Schedule staff to ensure coverage in store at all times scheduled to be open. Plan and supervise employees' daily activities and workloads, including hours of work and monitoring of timecards.
  13. Report safety hazards and property maintenance needs to the CO / Unit Leader.
  14. Schedule truck pick-ups of donated items.
  15. Sort, price, and place donated items on rack/shelves for display. Maintain attractive displays.
  16. Maintain a high level of cleanliness and orderliness throughout the stores.
  17. Schedule recycling pickups and keep track of competitive prices on recycled items.
  18. Bank cash receipts daily. Safeguard cash at all times and be responsible for cash register.
  19. Maintain confidentiality and comply with Salvation Army Safe From Harm guidelines.
  20. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with clients, co-workers, volunteers, and supervisors. This includes but is not limited to such actions as: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors, and clients; respect of others' property and person; and professional and appropriate communication to and about clients, co-workers, and supervisors.



Minimum Qualifications

High school or equivalent diploma, one-year related work experience with some supervisory experience. Combination of education and experience will be considered. Ability to successfully interact with a wide variety of people, primarily the retail public. Must be a team player, a self-starter, a good motivator of others, and perform well with minimal supervision. Must have a working knowledge of basic accounting skills and effective oral and written communication skills. Computer experience required. Must be bondable, have the appropriate valid driver's license and pass The Salvation Army MVR check. Must demonstrate ability to think independently and exercise sound judgment.

Physical and Working Conditions

Must be capable of continuously lifting 5 pounds, frequently lifting 25 pounds, occasionally lifting to 50 pounds, and frequently moving 50 or more pounds using dolly/cart/truck. Most work will be indoors. The display room is a temperature-controlled environment; however, the sorting/back room/storage area will be cold in the winter and hot in the summer.

Employee Status

FULL-TIME: 40 hours per week. Normal work hours will be determined by supervisor.
